Older games out of range

Sorry if this has been solved in the past - google searching hasn't helped and in site is disabled ftm.

Whenever I play older games I get the message 'out of range' if I'm using DVI. Using VGA they display fine for the most part. I'm running an integrated ati X1200 and my motherboard has the latest firmware. There aren't official ati drivers for windows 7, but I've tried under XP and Vista with official drivers, under windows 7 with the default driver installed by windows update and now I'm running the 64 bit vista drivers for a change of pace. All 3 times I've seen the same issue. Basically, this problems has existed since I got this computer I don't know how long ago, I'm just interested in getting some good classic games playing stable.

I've tried using ati tray tools to lock the refresh rate to 60hz but that just makes my whole computer freeze when I try to run the game, I've also set my monitor refresh to 60, 70, and 75 in windows which it shows are the only compatible refresh rates. All 3 work fine until I start up a game when 'Out of Range' gets displayed.

Fallout and lineage 1 off the top of my head. There've been quite a few though

What's happening is that your monitor can't display 640x480 through DVI connections. This is either because of cost cutting, or a crappy monitor, but there's not really a good, actual fix for this.

However, the program d3dwindower will help, by forcing the game into a correctly scaled window on your desktop.

Tried d3dwindower, didn't work. I'm using windows 7 64bit if that makes a difference, but when I loaded everything up and told it to run the program it just sat there.

Edit: Got frustrated and played some dead rising 2, came back to mess with it again and it just worked. Thanks elliotw2.
