Hair Help

Hello H/A,

I am in the market for a new hair style. I've had the same one for like 7 years now, and it's really time to change. So, I have two hair-related questions.

1. What should I do (in terms of getting haircuts) to get the hair I want? As of right now I think I am going to let it grow for a month or two and then just get it layered, not really shortened at all. Then do it again.

2. What kind of product should I use to style it? Specific products would be welcome, especially if you have this type of hair. I have heard mousse is what ladies use for their hair, which I assume is sort of the same thing you use for longer men's hair?

This is sort of what my hair looks like without anything in it (mine is probs 1 inch longer than this):

This is what I do with it now:

and this is what I want it to look like:

I have very fine hair, and it is pretty difficult to get it to stay the way I want it. It is also (I think) pretty dry. I do condition it and I'm probably going to start not shampooing it every day (I have heard this helps?).

Am I on the right track? Thank you in advance.

Do you have straight hair? Do you know how your hair will behave at that length?

I shower every day, my hair gets wet, but I only clean my hair every three days. Give it a shot, worse case scenario you look like crap for a few days. Having that much hair on your forehead is going to do wonders for any acne or pimples that you're prone to (ie, increase them like a mofo). As for products, I really like wax products to keep my hair in check. Just a little bit seems to keep the flyaways down and to hold the directions I brush it.

This is the answer I leave in every "hair advice" thread. Last time I checked, there aren't any hair stylists hanging out in H/A and those are the people you need to be asking (and I don't mean the girl at Supercuts in the mall). Find someone with hair you like and ask them who cuts it for them. Make an appointment. Put yourself in the stylist's hands with a few suggestions and let them do their job. Expect to spend $25-$30 + tip for a decent haircut.

They'll also be able to fill you in on products and how to style it after you left their shop.

Also, understand that certain haircuts, hair, and facial shapes do not go well together. Don't be upset if that particular style you want just doesn't work/looks like ass on you.

I just got around to asking my stylist what kind of shampoo/conditioner I should use rather than grabbing something that seemed okay off the shelf in in the grocery store about three months ago. It's like I'm walking around with a different person's head of hair, and I didn't even have to scalp anyone! I'm going to third "ask a good stylist".
