With my tax return, I have decided that along with my new tv, I will be getting a PSP. Can anyone recommend any good games that are out at the moment for it? I will definitly be picking up the FF games that are going to be released for it and most definitly Castlevania.

:Edit:
I really will play anything. Im not to big into sports or racing games but if they are innovative for the genre (IE burnout) i like most shooters, rpgs, some platformers (jak and daxter).

Portable Ops, Valkyrie Profile, and Syphon Filter.

That's all I can think of, really.

    Oh, Lumines.

Sid Meier's Pirates! is pretty good, especially if you haven't played the PC or Xbox version yet. And it's budget priced.

    No.

Maybe when you've purchased and played through the priorities, and Katamari can be acquired at a really cheap price. It's didn't translate well to the PSP, in my opinion.

My favourite PSP exclusive is Loco Roco.

It's pretty hard to make recommendations if you don't tell us what you're looking for.

www.gamerankings.com is a good place to start if you want to check out highly rated PSP games.

Yeah, but it's also available on the PS2 for 20 dollars (and, surprisingly enough, includes a game not available in the PSP release).

the MegaMan games didn't sell very well, but if you're a fan of the games, then I know at least Powered Up! should be an excellent choice. Syphon Filter's pretty good as well, if you like shooters. I put a fair amount of time into some games on the Sega Genesis Collection.

I haven't purchased it yet, but Killzone: Liberation's demo was pretty neat.

is metal slug anthology out? i have it for the wii, but still, i thought it was delayed.

Anyway, I just remembered that I originally bought the psp in anticipation of D&D Tactics, which has since slipped back to...March? Something like that. Also, last time I was Best Buy (some time ago) they had Death Jr. laying about for like ten bucks. I don't know much about it, other it's supposed to be pretty unusual.

I think the problem with the PSP lies with the fact that it doesn't have a killer app but just a number of above average games. It's holding it back from becoming a runaway hit.

No, what's holding it back is that Sony is utterly retarded. :P

But yeah, good choices suggested so far. I'd also suggest looking into the homebrew scene, since they've done some crazy shit(figured out Sony's PS1-on-PSP setup, and their compression scheme, so you can rip your own PSX games and play them on the PSP) that makes the machine well worth the money, in my opinion.

How inspiring is gameplay footage of the character walking through the town/daytime buildings in ANY SH? With these games, one has to trust they will do awesome, scary things in the "dungeons," so to speak. And I rather liked the way the camera angle tilted in the alley, it tells me that they will sometimes use that crazy angle effect (like with the wheelchair in previous SHs) even though it has a behind-the-back camera. It's fine that you aren't, and I'm not saying you're wrong to think it looks terrible, but I'm still excited for it-I've yet to play a SH I didn't love.

I've still got a bad taste in my mouth from Konami's decision to put it on the PSP. A game like SH almost requires a big screen with surround sound speakers to give you the proper effect.

It's still got a lot of development time to go, and it might not suck, I just think this is the wrong way to do it.

    Also, the monsters look silly.

Well, I don't remember shitty animation, hideous screen tearing, poor texture quality, music that consisted of what sounded like the same five-second loop over and over again and horrible fixed camera angles in SH 2, 3 or 4. But maybe that's just me. :P

Seriously, I'll probably never own a PSP anyway - not because I dislike it, just that I'll simply never be able to afford one along with everything else I want more - but that video wouldn't sell me on anything, game or hardware platform. If you're excited, good for you, I guess. For once I'm with Magus' on something. <shrugs>

For all the flack that the PSP gets, it seems like a decent enough system. Yeah, a lot of the best games on the system are ports and collections, but then again, ports & collections make a lot of sense on a portable system.

If I was to get a PSP, I'd get the Sega Genesis Collection first (so many good games on it) followed by Loco Roco. The Gradius Collection would soon follow. Despite owning the 360 version already, I'd pick up Lumines 2 since Lumines is puzzle heaven. And of course, the Castlevania collection that was just announced. Although I hear it wasn't as good as the original simple webgame, I'd like to try Every Extend Extra. Top that all off with that RPG made by the Megaten guys that is supposed to be really good and maybe the European version of Breath of Fire 3.

Yeah, I don't get all the PSP hate. If they ever release a version 2 of the system ala the DS Lite that is lighter, cheaper, and has better battery life, I'm there.

I don't have any particular articles, but the basic idea is this:

For ideal homebrew, you want a unit at 2.80 firmware that's the older motherboard. You get one of those, you're golden, since then you can downgrade to 1.50, then switch to the custom firmwares that're out now and be at 3.03 OE-B(NOT official 3.03, a completely custom one with its functionalities, DON'T UPDATE TO 3.03 FOR THE LOVE OF GOD). That gives you all the 3.03 functionality, including playing PSX games, and full homebrew capability. From there, pretty much go crazy. I've seen some interesting stuff done, including streaming media setups, improvements to the web browser, etc. I personally used to really like this game called Squarez, but I haven't looked into that one in a while. Should still be good, though.

And i am interested in homebrew. What kinda options do i have for that? Ive heard things that the newer firmwares dont allow for various homebrew options. Any info on that would be cool (minding we dont go into emulation territory due to rules)
I was just coming in to ask this. I've been toying with PSP purchase for a while now, and I'm sure I'll get one eventually, but can any PSP owners point out references to PSP firmwares and what's required? Or any Web sites that are must-reads?

So 1.50 is still the gold-medal firmware, right? And 2.80 has a one-step shortcut to go down to 1.50 and move on from there?

Is there a reference to SKUs or serial numbers that can tell you about what firmware new systems ship with?

(This is my main barrier to getting a PSP, aside from price -- having to figure all this shit out. :x)
