Most of the sales are going to be within 12 days after release.
With most games sure, but GT's tend to have long legs. GT5 Prologue only sold a couple of million its first year, it's now sitting at just over 5 million.
Blur was a mish-mash of a couple of successful racing genres that I'm sure sounded really good in theory, but fell flat in practice.
Dude! Let's make a kart game with real life cars!
Blur was a fantastic game that came out at the same time as two other racing games, and suffered from a very poor marketing campaign. I don't think it fell flat at all. The demo seemed very popular, but sadly no one ended up buying the game itself.
That 2.9 million was at the start of December, 12 days after GT5's release, I'm pretty sure they're a lot higher by now. And what are you trying to compare it to? Hot Pursuit's 5 million? You realise that's shipped, right? If you're going to compare that number to anything, compare it to GT5's 5.5 million shipped.
I'm just using chart numbers to estimate units sold. Shipped is a horrible number to work with. I wish companies would give sell through numbers for everything.
But you are correct, I neglected to include the rest of Gfk's numbers. The Germans did love them some GT5.
Well that's a pity. The sadist in me wanted it to bomb like Blur because of that stupid ad campaign.
Just and fair? No. But still would have been humorous to watch. :P
The Rift MMO is running, "We're not in Azaroth anymore" ads so you should be able to get some satisfaction there.
Seriously, how doomed is that going to be? I mean, it might be a perfectly fine MMO, but it's really hard to not get the impression they're trying to position themselves as a direct rival.

It's really funny too, because from the brief glance I've seen of Rift, it couldn't be a more shameless 1:1 copy of WoW if it tried.

I bought it, it's awesome. Though I went to play it online the other night and there were 57 other users on. Not exactly a high number.

One of these days I may end up buying Blur, as it did look fun.
But poor release timing and a terrible ad campaign just killed any chances of Blur doing well.
Blur really was fantastic, I will argue it's merits all day. 20 and 10 person online racing was ridiculous fun, it's also cheap as hell now and has 4 person split screen so anyone who likes fun and has friends should pick it up.
But yeah marketing and release timescales were horrendous, same with Split/Second which was great too.

And why is it horrible? You think publishers are shipping millions of copies to stores that aren't selling? I'm pretty sure that'd lose them a lot of money. Shipped numbers are fine, they're generally close enough. Trying to calculate accurate worldwide sell through numbers would be a massive pain in the ass, considering how many countries don't even have sales trackers. So you'll have to wait until all games are digitally distributed if you want those.
Just the UK, where it sold almost exactly the same as LBP1's first week (only 95 sales off). LBP1 did really well in the UK so that's a good sign. Otherwise nothing, Sony might give some shipped numbers when they release their Q3 report but I've no clue when they're doing that.

Um.. I've got a store with about 20 copies of Shred on the shelves that would like to have a word with you.
Shipped is a terrible number to go by.

Dead Space 2 is currently outpacing sales of its predecessor by a factor of two to one, publisher EA has announced.
Speaking at an investor call today, EA chief operating office John Schappert boasted that the sequel, released last week, "is approaching two million units sold in – double the sell through of the original Dead Space."
That's great news for survival horror fans. Following comments from EA exec Frank Gibeau last year that the original game "didn't hit expectations" at retail there was a sense that this was Visceral's last chance to get the franchise to stick.

I write about video games and stuff. It is fun. Sometimes.
Doesn't it seem like they're advertising Dead Space 2 a hell of a lot more than its predecessor? That could be it.

Nah, Dead Space had just as much if not more marketing. Remember they created an animated movie for it.
