Update BIOS without A: drive

It's been quite a while since I've bothered updating my BIOS. I'm going to be installing a new CPU in a day or two when it arrives, and I'll need to update to a specific BIOS version in order for my motherboard to play nice with the AM3 chip.

Well, I don't have a floppy drive. Any information I can find on ASUS's website seems to indicate you need one to update your BIOS. Is there another way? The update file I have is a .bin.

Can I just burn a CD with the file on it or is there something else I need to be doing here? I fear voodoo.

Look into a program called ASUSupdate, I can use that to flash my bios from within Windows.

Most recent ASUS boards have onboard utilities which allow you to flash the BIOS from a USB thumb drive. What model do you have?

If you go into your bios there might be a tool to update it there. I was going to update mine the other day and when I looked the DVD Drive was an option as well as floppy.

It's the M2N-SlI Deluxe. Trying to flash to version 5001.

Edit: actually EZFlash sounds familiar. I'll give that a shot later using a USB key.

Went ahead and threw the BIOS update onto a flash drive and went into EZFlash in my BIOS setup. It was all very easy, almost too easy. I always tell myself that whenever I'm doing anything hardware-wise, I should expect at least one problem that doubles my time investment. That has always held true over the past decade and a half, and why the heck would it stop now?

Update went fine and it asked me to press any key to reboot... and bam.. no POST. I left it for a good 5 minutes just in case, tried a cold reboot, etc. Machine wouldn't POST after the update. Luckily, popping the CMOS battery fixed the issue, so that's cool. According to msinfo32, my BIOS is now 5001.

I'm sure I'll have at least one more issue while installing the new CPU, but for now this is solved.

    Thanks guys!

Oh, hey. That's almost the same motherboard that I use. I use the M2N-Vista Edition. Yours has onboard wi-fi, mine doesn't. Supports SLi, though. Which I'm sure yours does as well.

When I updated my BIOS a few months ago, I just used the ASUS utility on their website. Did it within windows, went over without a hitch.

For future reference, if your phone has a USB plug and an SD card in it, you can also use that to update your BIOS since it's seen as a USB drive anyways. That's how I updated my last computer's BIOS.
