Right, I have that thread bookmarked. However, I'm having trouble finding some of the mods mentioned so far in that enormous list. I think the only one I could find was a bailout mod, and I'm not even certain it was the one mentioned on the previous page.
I'd also like to get a general idea of what mods people like to run to get rid of some of the suckage. There's just so much stuff in that list that I'm not sure what a good jumping off point is.

I want to love these games. I should love these games. They have all the ingredients that should make me cream my jeans, but every time I try to play I always end up going "man, I could totally just be playing Eve Online" and there goes my attempt to play X3.

It rebalances the ships and combat, and adds some useful functionality. PLUS it lists a myriad of other variable mods that can be downloaded to improve the general gameplay like:
- Making Ship sizes more realistic
- Cockpit View choices
- Adding engine trails to ships
I haven't gotten far enough in the game to need scripts to improve my trade fleets or war fleets yet, so I don't know about any of those types of mods.

If you don't want to install a wide scale game changing mod I installed a lot of stuff by lucike and gazz.
But to be honest with you, I carefully clicked on every link and read the mod details in the link, then made my own choice.
Some of the mods I did not install until I needed them. Actually most mods I didn't install until I needed them. I didn't install mars until I got a capital ship. I didn't install any logistics mods until I needed them.

Hrm. How many ##.dat files are there by default? I think I may've had some old mods fake-patched in by default, and I'm curious if I should just go ahead and reinstall or not.
Edit: Apparently 12! That works.

Hmm, I just checked and mysteriously my game now has the **modified** tag. I don't remember ever doing anything to earn that but it's far too late now to do anything about it. No wonder achievements haven't been popping...
Looks like I'll be getting into the scripts a bit earlier than I thought I would.
I'm a longtime player of the X series and I love it for giving me the opportunity to build my own fleet and headquarters, which are features that I've missed in other Elite-style games. I just wish that the game itself had better combat and less reliance on grinding stuff to build your factory empire.
They could make the game 30% better by opening the ini files and cutting the amount of time everything takes in half, or by 90% for the fucking marine training.
That's great. My friend was always talking to me about Freelancer and how great that game was and a lot of people seem to like comparing the X franchise to that game so I thought I would give this one a try. Are there any mods I should be installing?
If it helps, the KBAM space flight controls, at least for X3, are exactly like Freelancer.
As for mods, I'm not sure what a complete newbie to the game would use (I played the game for a couple months before stopping until a day or two ago), but one thing you want for sure is Cycrow's cheat package.

And doubling the speed of all missiles.

Why exactly would I want that. How hard is the game exactly?
The cheat package is great in that you can just cheat yourself up all sorts of different ships and different weapons and missiles and stuff and give them a whirl to see how they handle and how they're useful (or not) and lets you start exploring the various facets of the game without having to grind a ton for it.
Difficulty-wise, this can get pretty brutal at times, especially if you're fresh into the game/franchise. It's also got a pretty harsh power curve as you ascend the ship classes, and a general rule is that a ship can easily smite another ship if it's one class lower (IE, M4/Interceptor-class ships can snuff out an M5/Scout with ease, an M3/Fighter can do this to an M4, so on and so on).
By the way, Naval Shuffle was just updated to 1.3, so pop over to the thread to get it (Megaupload at the moment I'm afraid, since Filefront is pokey at times with uploading stuff).

Then again, once you start getting into the "modern" tiers of fighters, and capships, you'll find that with enough skill you can take out something above you with the right equipment.
The Race Wars and Sector Defense mods demonstrate this best. Every time I see a bomber warp into the system I shit myself, because I know the macross style missile spam is liable to take out or severely damage one of my capships.

I installed one of those race improvement mods for a while before uninstalling it. I uninstalled it because I'd try to do a mission and the macro spamming bombers would wipe out all my high pay targets before I could get near them.
It was awe inspiring to watch but yeah. Not mission friendly.
