The Square Enix Production Department is over. Things got announced. Good things. A few questionable things. Things.
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Warning: Ending Spoilers In Trailer
Pretty much the biggest non-surprise, FFXIII-2 has been officially announced after much blatant winking and nudging. However you felt about the first game, it made money, and with Square realizing that 5 year development cycles are retarded, they're taking the leftovers and assets from the original and rolling out a sequel roughly one year later.
All we know so far is that Lightning is the lead again, sporting a Soul Calibur-esque armor that has fanboys up in a tizzy (I think it's neat, so long as she doesn't break into a song and dance) and has her pitted against a (possibly male) mysterious counterpart. The logo seems to suggest a possible light/shadow thing here, but who knows at this point.
The bad news is that FFXIII's original director is back on board. The (possibly) good news is that they've read the feedback over what worked/didn't work before, so hopefully the sequel will be what Assassin's Creed II was to Assassin's Creed I.
Final Fantasy: Type-0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoP8Alclj2g
So it turns out the mysterious Type-0 trademark was not a new project, but in fact the renaming of the oft-delayed Final Fantasy Agito XIII, which dropped the XIII name altogether on account that the game bears practically no resemblance to FFXIII. Could this in fact be a ploy to remove the stigma of the FFXIII brand? With the Fabula Nova Crystalis compilation dropping the XIII numeral as well, it's certainly debatable.
Whatever it's called, Type-0 is unquestionably the biggest PSP game yet: so big it requires 2 UMDs. It certainly looks like a big, military-influenced game, but if there's a multiplayer component involved, then Americans will lose out as usual (PSP ad-hoc matches are plentiful in Japan, and practically ignored over here).
Final Fantasy Versus XIII
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiIx9VJWSl8
Likewise, Versus is still keeping the XIII numeral, despite being the least thirteenieth of the thirtrinity of thirteenable titles.
But maybe that's Nomura's own way of telling you that his baby is the real deal; this gameplay-laden trailer practically outshines FFXIII in every way: real-time battles, an open world with a day/night system, an interactive environment that constantly changes due to the sheer chaos occurring in each set piece, a setting more grounded in reality along with its sharply-dressed mustachioed characters.
What's even more impressive is that all this footage is already "inferior", as the current game has reportedly exceeded the visuals found in this Alpha preview. This also probably means that development is still way off (Square will not give out a date), but based on what we've seen, this is
the Final Fantasy game to watch this generation.
Feel free to get your hopes up high. You're allowed.
Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy 012
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXCNLli_Nco
It's still a stupid name, but Dissidia is fast becoming the biggest love-letter the franchise has ever known. Not one, not two, but
three new characters have been unveiled:
Prishe, the immortal Elvaan girl from Final Fantasy XI, who fights using bare-handed martial arts and a mouth so filthy it makes Cid Highwind look like a choir boy.
Gilgamesh, the multi-armed buffoon from Final Fantasy V, who was not actually shown but clearly teased as an ominous voice challenging Bartz from across a dimensional rift.
Aerith, the prettiest zombie ever from Final Fantasy VII. Rather than appearing as a full-fledged character representing FFVII (job's taken, toots), Aerith is instead a downloadable Assist character, available only for Japanese gamers who purchase the paid demo, called Prolongus. It's another dirty deal in the world of DLC, but hopefully the West will get a chance to add the flower girl to Dissidia's Ladies' Night.
If you'd like to view most of the alternate costumes, someone quickly ripped them from the demo.
Kingdom Hearts 3D : Dream Drop Distance

Right around the moment your eyes roll over from yet another retread with KHI Sora and Riku (as well as the painfully pun-filled subtitle), you may find yourself amazed by the beefed-up gameplay system, which takes the basic battles of previous games into a whole new acrobatic level. Sora and Riku have both taken a dose of happy juice, judging by the way they bounce across walls and lampposts. In addition, a new Disney World was teased in the form of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (still Disney's greatest movie ever....don't deny it).
What was thought to be another quick filler game looks like the biggest advancement in the series yet. And with a Secret Movie that will officially kick-start the long awaited Kingdom Hearts III, this title now remains one of the most anticipated 3DS games yet.
And as always, feel free to take a look at my Final Fantasy-related articles in my
blog. Feedback is always appreciated.

Honestly if they just fixed the pacing and threw in some decent dialogue they would probably have something.

We already know this and they've already shown gameplay in trailers.
- Modified Crisis Core battle system w/ a party of three (3) quoted "to be the fastest version of ATB ever created"
- Multiplayer, both ad-hoc and infrastructure (online) support for up to three players
- Controllable summons and switchable party leaders
- Yes it's a PSP game
And we already have the basic story setup.

I'd be happy if they just made it a replacement for chapters 10 - 13 that didn't suck.
Was any of this real-time? It's been a while, but I think the only real-time footage they showed didn't feature any real look at the ATB system. Do post a vid if you find it.

Yeah, honestly I wouldn't dislike FF XIII nearly as much as I do if it weren't for how terrible the first several chapters of the game are. It got *really* fun once they actually got out of "tutorial mode" and they diversified the level designs a lot (which is to say, the first several chapters are basically all straight hallways with monsters every couple feet... that's extremely boring). I think I could get behind a game that uses (I would hope) the same battle engine but doesn't hand-hold you at the start like XIII did.
I am excited for Versus though - Nomura has a great track record (with me at least) so I am really hopeful for that one. I do hope it comes to 360 though. I really don't see a reason for them not to do that since the engine was obviously already ported over.
Oh dang, I thought Agito was supposed to be some Harry Potter meets Organization 13 magic school setting. That looks like they decided to give the Dollet invasion its own game. Looks sweet.

Why would your PS3 have anything to do with your PSP's Ad-Hoc?
You'd think I'd have the advantage with a wired connection.

PVP in Dissidia is a fucking blast.

Direct PSP-PS3 connectivity so you can play the thing on your TV and use whatever online feature you want.

At the very least you can use PS3 headset chat and keyboard text chat. =\

Still standing by my guess that it won't be shocking at all.
Edit 2: The reveal, I mean.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants this to happen.
Also, Phantasy Star Portable 2 had a true online mode that didn't require using the PS3 as a middleman, so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to code it in other PSP games.
He wasn't realls responsible for Aerith or Zack, no. Well, Zack, maybe; the character and death wasn't his work, but the modern depiction of it in Crisis Core was. He's credited as a writer, but most of his work on FF7 was merely art. Sakguchi created the world overview, Nojima wrote the treatement and Kitase had a large say as director. A bunch of other staff, including Nomura, contributed writing for sidequests and such, but that's not consequential to the major overarching plot.
With Sakaguchi gone and Kitase moving up into management roles and thanks to the success he had in the roles for KH, Nomura took over the role of being the dude who'd create the overall world-view/summary while Nojima continued to lead the teams writing the treatements. They've since given that a new title within Square; Nomura is often credited as "Creative Producer" while somebody like Kitase or Shinji Hashimoto takes on the title of actual Producer.
It actually says a lot about Nomura's ability as a writer in that it depends who he works with in terms of how well his stories come out. Nojima worked on Crisis Core and Advent Children Complete, both of which turned out alright in story terms, while he didn't work on Dirge, which is fucked.
The strong indication with regards to Aerith is that the death of Sakaguchi's mother during the production of FF7 caused some major changes to the game. The world-view expressed in FF7 - the belief in reincarnation etc - was already there, but a death in the family caused Sakaguchi to want to try to recreate that pain in the game, or so the tales go. It's also noted that FF7 was produced part in-tandem with Chrono Trigger, and the speculation is that both games continued large 'revival' plot arcs until FF7's was changed.
That whole period is something I hope to ask Sakaguchi about next time I see him when he's doing PR tours for The Last Story when it gets localized (and it will, don't you worry...)

I'm confused because I thought all PS3s had this.
So did I, but I guess some don't. I don't even use the wifi on it, except when I use Ad-Hoc Party.
I long for the day when I can stop using the wifi on my systems...but the layout of this house just isn't conducive to that.
It's literally only the 20 Gig PS3 they released at launch that doesn't have it.
Wanna make sure I'll be available to watch it.
I had heard of the Sakaguchi/Mother story, but I've also heard people debating this as a myth. I really am curious who officially came up with the concept.
Considering how you'll be lucky to see two titles at the most released this year (Dissidia and one other), I wouldn't worry about it. There has been mention that they want to cut down on development times, but I'll believe it when I see it.
It was also $100, and again since I had my modem in my room, I didn't see the need to spend extra on a feature that would only be considered inferior to a straight-up direct connection.
Funny how I still end up screwed out of things. :?
Actual conference is at 4am est on Tuesday, stream of conference two hours later.
Added to OP.

Ahhh me. I can still keep hoping, though!
'1st Production Department' and 'Armor Project' are not the same thing, so why would you expect Armor Project stuff from a 1st Production Department conference?

This entire comment is ridiculous. Essentially you're saying you've only played XII since X, so how can you say with a straight face "it keeps disappointing"?
There's a lot more to FF than just the mainline series, you know?
Platinum FC: 2880 3245 5111
Normally I'd be all over this, but 6am est is a pretty crap time to get up for a conference that may or may not deliver. Heck, we don't even know if they'll pull a TGS and not show any of the actual footage for streaming folk.
How long is the conference anyway? And is the streaming in 6am just a recording of the 4am report, or is it literally a live repeat of the first conference that is also being recorded?

Yeesh, chill, man. I've played some of the spin offs. FFX-2, Dirge of Cerberus, the Kingdom Hearts games. Okay, I did like the first Kingdom Hearts quite a bit. The second one suffered from limited interactivity with the world, though.
Actually Dirge of Cerberus had a good story, just terrible game mechanics. It seems like the newer games either have a bad system and a good story, or a good system and a bad story. They have trouble striking a balance, I guess.
Anyway, I keep hoping they'll strike that balance again. Most of the reviews I rely on have said unfavorable things about 13, but I'd certainly give it a shot if I actually had a system it would run on.
The whole "don't judge until you try it" argument doesn't really pan out.

If they seriously pull that "Hey we're not going to show the people who actually care" crap, heads will roll.
I've never understood why they are so goddamn weird about letting us see awesome shit, it's free advertising.
