I have a new xbox with the built in wireless adapter and my computer doesn't. I'm wondering if I can connect my computer to the xbox and use its wireless to get internet access on my computer

I don't think the Xbox is a router.

A PCI wireless adapter card is like $25.

Even less for a USB adapter: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704045&cm_re=usb_wifi-_-33-704-045-_-Product

Is a PCI wireless card better than a usb one?

I'm using a usb one and it's pretty much fine so far.

pretty sure the general consensus about USB adapters being not good stem from the days of USB1.x being bandwidth limiting. USB1.1 had a "full speed" of 12mbit/s, so it was easy to max out. USB2.0, which is what everything uses now has a max speed of 480mbit/s, which is going to be difficult for regular consumers to max out.

    TLDR: USB adapters are fine.
