Summer Furniture.

So for next year at college, I have an apartment to live in. Which is great. So starting in august, I got an apartment for a year.

However, this summer, I have to still live here in Missouri rather than go back home so that I may become an in state resident.

I have a house lined up with some friends that I can stay in for the summer, but i'd have to buy my own furniture, which kinda sucks, because the apartment is fully furnished from the getgo.

So I need a bed, and maybe a shelf and a computer desk. I'm not looking for elegant, I need functional and cheap. Anyone have any recommendations for maybe a futon or something? I keep getting suggestions to "get a futon" but I honestly don't really know what that is, and someone else told me that'd be expensive. So I'm just downright confused. What's your Advice, H&A?

A futon is a sofa-bed, basically. It doesn't perform either function well (lousy bed, lousy couch). You can get them at Ikea for pretty cheaply. If you're not looking for anything fancy, a mattress on the floor is probably adequate and you can get a card table and chair or two from Wal*Mart for pretty inexpensively.

People will be graduating this April, so there should be lots of old furniture for cheap, or free. That's probably the cheapest option, especially considering you only need if for 4 months, and can then throw it away.

Yeah, Ikea is pretty expensive for something that you'll only be using for a few months. I suggest going to thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army or whatever you have) and get a few things. I have 2 couches and a few nice arm chairs and some tables that I have picked up over my college years, and I know it hasn't all totalled more than $50.
