That having to check in every few days of offline play thing sounds a bit annoying. Making me reconsider canceling my impulse preorder and waiting for a steam deal
Don't you have to be able to connect to the internet to actually get the game off of Impulse or Steam?
Yeah, but the whole reason I got it off impulse (other than the fact that it was the only place that didn't have that ridiculous price hike) was that you only need to use it to install the games on impulse, after that, you never need to load impulse.

I still think internet checks are the worst kind of DRM.
It's not going to stop me from buying the game. It's just so ubiquitous that when the bombs drop and we're all living in fallout shelters, I'm going to be pretty pissed that I can't play my copies of Dragon Age 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 because there's no high-speed internet infrastructure left on the planet.

What about sunset/EA gone/20years from now?
There are sunset plans in place for all our titles. Each one can be different, but most common solution is that the online requirement would be patched out.

It being patched out is about as likely as it being needed, I'd say. It's nice they say that and maybe even really mean it, but when the company goes bust we'll see who shells out to do it.
To the people that say DA2 has worse graphics than DA1: Are you high?
The ugliness of DAO is overrated. Even though there are bad textures, the cinematic direction doesn't focus on them like ME2 and it's insistence on having the NPC civilian clothes with textures so small you can see individual pixels taking up the entire screen.

And the AA actually more or less works.
That's fine and all, but DA2 is still clearly better looking than DAO with the possible exception of the early screenshots.

I've spent the past two weeks replaying DA 1 and Awakening, and I do think it's a straight up hideous game. The art design is lacking, most environments are small and blocky, and the character models are atrocious (especially the hair).
That said, it does have some nice animation, and the dungeon architecture does look great for the most part - Orzammar and the frost ruins in particular.
I still don't think we've seen enough of DA 2 to judge whether or not it looks better. But going by that one video that actually shows gameplay, it looks like the effects and shading are unfinished, the UI looks like butt that has been shit out of an ass and the animation is really erratic and janky.
It all depends on how good the final game looks in motion on the highest available settings. We'll just have to wait and see.

Playing on the PC with all the mods the graphics really look great, I mean it isn't some whimsical fantasy world but it does a much better job of feeling gritty with all the mods. Not perfect but much better than the generic.
It really isn't bad it just isn't the typical brightly colored fantasy that every expected, it is the Gears of War of fantasy.

I'll echo Turambar. I'm playing DAO again on the PC and it looks just fine. Granted, this is with a heavyweight gaming rig and all the setting cranked to full at 1920x1200.
Side note: I preordered DA2 for the PC. I can't see buying this for the console and forgoing mod opportunities.

Haha Yeah, the UI looks like a WoW UI mod from all the videos I've seen. I hope they clean
that up for release. I like the animations though, I think their spells and abilities look
pretty good so far.
I'm not sure I'll be able to play this right away since school gets pretty intense around the release date, but I'm paying full price and preordering because I feel I should have paid more than $20 for ME and $40 for ME2. We'll call it a perceived Bioware deficit payment.

Why does it need cleaning up, exactly? It's pretty simple and extremely easy to read. And it's minimalistic and uncluttered.
I mean, granted, they could have used my WAR UI mod as a model and it would have been way better, but that's life, you know?
Parts of DAO look good. And the game looks quite good, for the most part, zoomed out as far as you can. Almost like the areas were made for you to see them from there.
But there are plenty of extremely muddy textures that look straight out of 1998 and a lot of the areas have some really awful jaggy looking geometry. The lighting also sometimes does some odd things, but that's not unique to DAO.
I just read the DRM list for the game, and assuming that's true, it's very very good news. I hope publishers are getting a bit less afraid of piracy on PC and realizing they can put games on sale on steam and make better bank than full price at retail outlets.
I may buy this game after all.

It's not more cluttered than DA: O, but it is very inelegantly designed. I get what they were going for, but it doesn't actually look like it conveys any proper info; it's just a bunch of glaring bars and icons filling the screen. It might be a nitpicky thing to say, but I probably wouldn't be complaining if it didn't look so garish.
Either way, looks like we'll finally be seeing the full thing in action next friday:

I think it's funny that the only topic of discussion in this thread basically comes down to DA1 vs DA2. Without that we'd have nothing.
Except that apparently half the people here apparently actively hate DAO, as opposed to just not likeing it as much, like in a certain other thread that is having a 1 v 2 fight

Even the icons are more informative, even if you can't tell exactly what the ability is by looking at the picture. But activated abilities, sustained abilities, and passive abilities all get differently shaped icons both on your skillbar and in the skill trees.

It may have been a fever dream. I've also been seeing about half a foot of snow outside my Texas house for the past week, so it's entirely possible that I'm not all here.

Too bad it will be just as easy to download the game off a torrent and bypass all that as it will be to buy off of steam.

I'm not sure if it's because of my new vid card or because my memory has exaggerated how bad it was on my first playthrough.

I have it on preorder. Hopefully, the demo doesn't make me change my mind.

Yeah...it still looks hideous in consoles. I know, NOT the platform but I think it still stands. DAO is quite ugly IMHO.

I would like it cleaned up because it clutters the whole screen.
Is that really cluttered up?
I may buy this game after all.
The stylization is still a little weird, I guess. But really. It looks completely usable.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
That is obviously about fifty times more cluttered than DA:O. Plus, the icons don't look fantasy-ish enough. Also, I can see pixels everywhere.
Worst game ever.
That was a good time.
