Long story short I'm moving to Winter Park, Florida here in March. It's just outside of Orlando.
My big question is how safe is it there, generally? I'm wanting to bring my Ducati Monster 696 with me, but I'm not sure how generally Orlando is for safety of property outside. If my bike will likely get stolen in that area, I'd rather just leave it home or find a storage shed to lock it up in.
I haven't found an apartment just yet, but I assume I'll have to just leave the bike parked in a regular parking spot with a cover on it when not in use.
Winter Park isn't awful, but the Orlando area in general can be sketchy. I know my friend had a Harley for 2 years while he was there and never had any problems.
Winter Park is an affluent suburb of Orlando, but as with most places that are similar, there are pockets of rough areas down the street. I drive through there fairly regularly for work, and Winter Park proper is very upscale and nice. What actual part are you going to be staying on/near? If you're going to Rollins where the majority of freshman have a vehicle manufactured in Germany, you should be fine, if it's Full Sail and the surrounding areas, well......those kids are crazy.
Winter Park is actually not that bad. There's some great bars there and overall it's more artsy than the surrounding cities.
I lived in Orlando for about three years and the only dangerous thing in Winter Park is the overzealous cops. They're super aggressive but they're also patrolling a city with more million dollar homes than the rest of the county. Whatever you do, watch your speed.

"We’re surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them."
Seriously, the speed limit through most of Winter Park is 30mph and they will pull you over without a second worth of hesitation. The flip side to this is you do have an extremely vigilant police force.
