Ragnarok, Götterdämmerung, Whatever You Want To Call It, It's The [Apocalypse] Thread
So I've been taking a Sci-Fi literature class this semester, and the first few stories we've been reading have been apocalypse stories, like Stephen King's "The End of the Whole Mess", and Cory Doctorow's "When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth." Grim stuff, but interesting discussion fodder.
So SE++, it's the end of the world. Talk about your zombie survival strategy, discuss how to properly hunt elk from the driver's seat of a moving Mustang, or just trade tips on how to keep all the sand from getting into the carburetor of your favorite death car.
I'd like to start or maybe join a commune based around a superstore somewhere in the countryside. With luck that should provide enough food to last until some rudimentary farming could be started. Unless something has fucked the world enough that farming is impossible, in which case we are fucked.
I once spent an afternoon considering the technical difficulties of creating a sort of biodome-based self sufficient human colony within the earth crust. Presumably, if built in the right spot, it should be possible to make one that could last a century or so at least. Plants grown under UV-lights powered by geothermal electricity could provide both nutrients and oxygen, beyond that the biggest challenges should be filtering the air and water and not going crazy. Not sure how deep down it would have to be to resist a gamma ray burst.

I'm expecting death to come at virtually any time from unforeseeable asteroid impact
if I'm lucky it'll hit near enough that I'll die instantly instead of living a few terrified months before dying of starvation or dehydration or being murdered by other crazed people
Theres a now-defunct podcast I really enjoyed that was dedicated to various end of the world scenarios, mainly in film. Its a couple of nerds sitting around blathering, mostly, but its pretty entertaining if you like this stuff.
The concept of rebirth and resurrection has always fascinated me. I think it's why I kind of have a soft spot for phoenixes. To be completely eradicated and still rise from the ashes anew is an enviable trait at the very least.
Anyway, less on the literal meaning resurrection, thinking about the repercussions and eventualities in different situations in which the human race is nearly wiped out but manages to persevere can be really interesting and thought-provoking
but talking about what you'd do if zombies were real is borin' as hell

A guy at the pool hall was wearing some stupid goth boots with steel toes. My friend asked him why and he said "it'll make it easier to kill zombies when the apocalypse comes".

As for the end of the world? Personally, I think that the whole 2012 hypothesis will probably just end up with us finding out that the Mayans were trollin'.

Alright then, enlighten me.
Not even the Mayans actually believed the world would end in 2012
There is no more significance to their calendar ending on Dec. 21st 2012 than there is to our calendars ending on Dec 31st every year
In both cases it rolls over and starts again
If anything, the Mayans would have had a celebration to commemorate the fact that their civilization had been around for a whole Great Cycle (roughly 5000 years) and then the next day they would have gone on with their lives as normal
In the 70s some new age writers came up with this idea that a "global consciousness shift" would take place on that date, whatever the fuck that means, while some others took this and ran with it and came up with the "end of the world" idea
Completely ignoring the fact that there are a number of Mayan writings that make references to future events which would happen after the 2012 date with no indication of anything having changed in the intervening time

That being said When Sysadmins Ruled The Earth is a good story
I got a little confused at the end.
I wasn't sure if Felix was still rebuilding, or if he had just settled for keeping the smaller server working with Van.
