His name is Penn Jillette
This is his partner Teller.
Together, they are Penn and Teller.
And this is your Penn and Teller appreciation thread.
If you don't know, Penn and Teller are an irreverent magic/comedy duo who have been performing to the delight of audiences for decades. Many of their tricks (especially in their earlier years) involved Teller somehow being maimed or even killed, through several different methods ranging from knife wounds to drowning.
Penn started as a juggler, having graduated from clown college (
seriously). He liked magic, but disliked people who presented it as real supernatural powers.
Teller is a former Latin teacher who always enjoyed magic. Before meeting Penn, he would perform by himself at various functions and parties. As part of his gimmick, he does not speak during performances. He picked this up as a shtick when he would perform by himself, because he found it was a lot more difficult for audiences to heckle when you don't talk.
Penn and Teller are very outspoken atheists, debunkers, and skeptics. They have a particular dislike for types like mediums, psychics, and faith healers who use illusions and chicanery to prey on the emotions of vulnerable people.
They have an award winning program on Showtime called Bullshit! where they present strong, often controversial opinions on a variety of topics such as reflexology, magnet healing, ESP, creationism, PETA, and the Boy Scouts.
They have a penchant for explaining tricks during or after performing them. Though they have said that many times the secrets behind many magic tricks are really, really boring, so they make up new tricks that are more exciting to explain. For my money, the way that they make the explanation of a trick part of a show is as entertaining as the trick itself.

I had the opportunity to see them perform live on stage last month and I absolutely love their show. They are ridiculously good at what they do, are a class act all the way, and are consummate professionals through and through.

Sometimes they perform tricks together, and sometimes they have separate tricks. I particularly like Teller's solo tricks because he is so damned good at sleight of hand and the lack of speaking lets you focus completely on the trick.

Oh, and for a while, Penn was the main announcer voice on Comedy Central several years ago.

It's so wierd to hear Teller actually speak
Defying gravity
Yeah they had a show about that.
It really pisses me off that he's selling the tricks, and still trying to come off as doing real magic. I've never really liked him. David Blaine I kind of liked, back when he was actually doing illusions, because his illusions were actually really fucking good. Now he's doing something else, and it's admirable for what it is (pushing the limits of the human body), but it's not really magic.
But fuck Criss Angel in the ear. With a palmed cigarette.
You let him freak your mind.
I'm not sure what it is exactly. Its on a thin line between "somewhat interesting" and "outright stupid."
But, yeah, no, definitely not magic.
yeah
At some point, he had Phil Plait and Joe Rogan on the air debating whether the moon landing occurred.
If you know who Phil Plait is you should be able to guess who was arguing which point.
well, they can't all be penn and teller/bill maher, hopefully
Too be fair, it could be pretty obnoxious sometimes.
Clearly you haven't seen Foolproof post.
show me some more cool youtube clips
This image is enough to convince me.
It was magic
I should try to dig it up
They spent an entire episode of their TV show saying that the vaccine stuff was bullshit.
They also called out Jenny McCarthy on being an uneducated silly goose, so that was good times.
this is you in a nutshell
This is my first time hearing about this.
What alternatives?
Penn in a nutshell.
that guy's tv show sucks, and he's probably knocked out his fair share of women
tricks are something whores do for money
I also agree with most of what they say and I especially love their stance on alternative healing strategies. Being in medicine that shit aggravates me so much.
yessssssssssssssssssssssss
