Moving to Switzerland! Technical Advice!

Hey all,

So in short, my wife is getting promoted, and we are being shipped off to Switzerland in a few weeks. Probably end up there for about 1.5-2 years, living in Bern. I'm excited! But I'm curious about a few things:

PS3: I have a 40GB PS3, about 2.5 years old. Will this work in Switzerland? The reason I ask is the TV standard over there is digital. Here in the state we use the ATSC standard, while over there they use the DVB standard. (nice Wikipedia map here) This includes a different resolution (USA has 486i lines, Swiss have 576i) and possibly other technical stuff I don't fully understand. I also have used my google fu to determine that most PS3 games and Blu Ray's are not region encoded, but most DVD's are. In short, will my PS3 work there? And by work, I mean if I plug it into a Swiss HDTV (we are not bringing our current TV, as it won't work at all over there), will the PS3 be smart enough to figure out that it needs to adjust it's resolution to whatever is needed?

Steam! I love steam, for various reasons. I plan on getting the fastest internet connection possible over there and blowing up various peeps in BC2. Will Steam service have any problems with the relocation to Switzerland? My nightmare is that I try to log in, and it will give me some sort of error. My google fu fails me here, all the results I get to my "Will steam work in Switzerland" query returns geothermal energy links. :?

And lastly, if anyone has any other random advice or tales of Swiss adventures, please share away!

Danke schön!

Steam should be fine as far as I understand. As long as your have your account information and an internet connection I don't see how there could be an issue.

Also, you may want to get into target shooting, it's pretty big over there.

Good to hear about Steam, it would suck to lose that service.

Target shooting you say? Sounds interesting, can an American buy/rent/shoot in Switzerland? I will have a full residency/work permit.

That I have no idea about, all I know is that I used to shoot with a local Swiss club. They apparently need to keep their rifle skills up to date due to the military training in their country. As a result there are gun ranges in many places with very nice equipment.

You would need to look up their gun laws, etc. Maybe even wait until you get there and talk with some people if you are interested. Although I am far from an expert on the Swiss or living in Switzerland, I don't think you would have trouble finding information.

Fair warning though, Switzerland is apparently expensive as hell to live in. My grandfather attended several competitions there, when he returned he was telling us about paying the equivalent of $9 for toast and a coffee.

Don't worry about Steam. You'll buy games through the European store (paying in Euros rather than US dollars), which means some deals might be priced differently. In other words, find a friend in the US with a PayPal account who can gift stuff to you.

This is no way relates to your OP, but while you are there, you need to make sure you shoot a Schmidt-Rubin Karabiner-31 (K-31 for short). Shouldn't be hard to find.

I own one, and it is probably my favorite gun. They are what the Swiss trained with back in the '40s.

Anyways - can't help you with your PS3 and Steam. You can try emailing Steam customer support, though. I'm sure they'd be able to help out.

    Have fun!

On the PS3: As long as you are connected via HDMI, the PAL/NTSC differences don't matter. If you are not connected via HDMI, it pretty much won't work (weird colors, wrong refresh rate, etc). You will be able to play games from anywhere, as the vast majority of PS3 games are not region-locked. If you buy games in the EU (as opposed to importing from the US), though, you will have to make an EU-based PSN account to download DLC. You will not, however, be able to view EU region-coded Blu-Ray or DVD movies on your US PS3.

a5ehren: thanks for the info! That eases my concern, as I hopefully will be connecting to the TV over there via HDMI cable.

Toldo: I'm assuming the European Steam store encompasses Switzerland as well? As Switzerland is not part of the EU, and they still use the Swiss franc, not the Euro.

And now I'm excited to see what I can shoot over there. I'm going to have to do some research when I get there and see where/what I can shoot.

Is the HDMI interface really important, regarding the PS3 thing?

European HDTV and American HDTV is the exact same thing. The problem you're describing would be the difference between NTSC and PAL and there's pretty much no way you could possibly have trouble with that if you use a HDTV as opposed to an old one.

That is regardless of how you connect it, HDMI, component or whatever it'll work most definitely.

Yeah I think the PS3 can handle the difference in the video settings anyway if he accidentally buys a really old PAL-only TV :P. HDMI just makes the whole thing less painful because the TV can self-report the resolutions and refresh rates supported.
