Any printer recommendations?

I am fucking fed up with my Brother 3240c printer. I despise this garbage piece of shit. I bought some new cartridges and every colour works, except for black. I cleaned it and everything. Fuck it. I spent 80 bucks on cartridges, and I didnt even print that fucking much.

Anyways, I'm looking for a reliable printer.

-Must have fax.
-No interest in printing colour, photos, or whatever. Just want black.
-Doesn't have to have scan or copy, but would be nice.
-No Brother if possible. Don't want to give these assholes any more of my money.

Now, this printer is bubblejet. Thinking about laser. Is it worth getting just to print text documents? Not printing an extravagant amount, and doesn't have to be fast or anything, I just don't want to keep having to buy cartridges anymore. Also, space is a bit of an issue. Anything out there that isn't ginormous?

I live in Canada if that helps.

I have a brother (yes, I know) 2070N that I love. It's a personal laser, and since all I need is b&w, it's awesome. It also plugs into my router instead of a PC, so every computer in the house can use it without a problem.

No fax, so I assume it's out for you.

But I highly, highly recommend a laser if you don't need color. I'm sorry I don't have any recommendations for a personal laser/fax, but I'm sure they're out there.

My printer's a Brother, too, and not a fax, but I just wanted to say yes, a laser printer is worth it for just text. I bought one 10 years ago and have never regretted it. I'm happier with it than with any other computer purchase I've ever made.

EDIT: Fatwallet and Slickdeals periodically have printer deals pop up, including multifunction machines, so you could try lurking there for a while.

+1 on the laser printer. It is absolutely worth it. I upgraded from inkjet a couple of years ago now and have never looked back. I've had a brother HL-2142 that I picked up on special and since i've had it its never had so much as a paper jam and I think i've only needed to refill the toner once.

with laser you're just replacing ink cartridges with toner cartridges... and just like with inkjet printers, it's sometimes cheaper to buy a whole new printer than it is to replace the ink :D

i have one anti-recommendation: HP printers are great in my opinion - hardware wise. But their software was apparently authored by over-medicated retarded monkeys... it's seriously the worst piece of garbage you will ever put on your computer - i honestly prefer some trojans and viruses to HP printer software.... so don't get an HP

Correct, but your price per page is much, much lower with the toner than it will ever be with ink. In my experience, with ink jets you'll get maybe several dozen pages printed with a fresh ink cartridge at best. Fresh toner in a laser printer will get you tens of thousands of pages printed.

If you would rather avoid getting a Brother machine, I know Samsung has several mono (b&W) laser multi-function machines for about $150 (US) with reasonably priced toner cartridges as well. From what you described, these machines are most definitely the way to go over your comparable inkjet printer.

Brother, HP, and Samsung all have nice B&W laser printers for about $100. I've had an HP 1012 for over five years now and can't complain at all. Sure, the toner costs $65, but even with pretty regular printing, I only replace the toner every 18 months or so.

If you don't need color, there's absolutely no reason anymore not to get a B&W laser. Some of them aren't even much bigger than your run-of-the-mill inkjet.

Fax will cost you a few bucks extra, but I suspect you can still get a very nice unit for not much more than $150.

Yeah, another +1 for the laser printer. I had an HP color laser that was purchased in 2006, printed off about 15000 pages on the original toner cartridges over 4 years with no clogs or jams.

If you do decide to get a laser, you should reconsider your stance on Brother because their toner is much cheaper compared to their competitors — at least when I checked this spring. HP's toner is about $80 a pop for each color, while Brother's is $50 for high-capacity toner cartridges. And, as mentioned above, the think about a toner cartridge is that it will last you a really, really long time.

Look into low end Ricoh units if you want low cost per print and reliable solid laser printers. Amazon often has one on for $200 - $300. It's a slightly higher upfront cost, but will give you much better prints than the others, and be a lot more solid of a machine. The toner is also cheaper than most.

I'd just like to point out that the latest HP software is actually much better. It was awful before, but the new one is much less obnoxious and easier to use. Basically if it's one of the new printers (the ones with eprint, smart install on lasers) it comes with the new software that doesn't blow chunks.

Just stick with the basic drivers or if you go with the full package (which you'll have to do if you want to wireless scan or copy), choose not to install the extra software such as "Shop with HP" and some of the other obvious options.

The only printer company I'd absolutely stay away from is Kodak because they are the loudest, poorest quality printers I've ever had the displeasure of attempting to use.
