Cue up another round of 'are remakes a good thing or bad'!
For those of you who have had enough of Will Smith and his too-talented family, this is not news for you. Earlier this week we heard rumors here that Will was working on a remake of Annie . In a press release issued this morning, that rumor was confirmed. Smith and his Overbrook Entertainment company are partnering with Jay-Z to bring Annie back to the big screen, a feat that has not been attempted since Disney’s 1999 version.

Annie originated on Broadway where it continues to fill theaters and earn awards yearly, but this new take will be a little different. Smith’s 10-year-old platinum-selling recording artist daughter Willow will fill the role of the previously ginger character. With the inclusion of Jay-Z, who sampled “It’s A Hard Knock Life” in his 1999 song “Hard Knock Life”, expect an edgier, urban take on the classic tale of little orphan Annie.

Overbrook partner James Lassiter had this to say about working with Jay-Z:

"We are excited to partner together to develop and produce a wide variety of films with our longtime friend JAY-Z, with whom we share a common global vision, both commercially and philosophically, and look forward to collaborating once again with the incredibly talented executives at Sony."

Overbrook has had a lot of success so far and chances are they’ll keep the trend going with Annie. No other casting news beyond Willow Smith, but since Overbrook’s credits include Ali, Hitch, The Pursuit of Happyness and I am Legend, expect Will Smith to peak his head in there somewhere. More on this as more roles get filled.

I was not a fan of the new Karate Kid except for jackie chan who always makes me smile.

Also I think will smith needs to stop putting his kids on stage. His daughter is not an amazing artist, she's just a cute little girl who sang a song they hired someone to write for her.

I'll be honest, I didn't even know Will Smith had a daughter, much less one who already has sold records. For my education (as well as those who are as clueless as I was to this fact), I found a music video of her's to see how well she can sing.

Everyone knows that Obama being elected was done merely for the cause of breaking the color barrier, thereby paving the way for Will Smith to eventually become President.

If Will Smith really wanted to show off how rich he is he'd remake Black Swan and give his daughter the lead.

Annie brings back horrible memories of pit. SO MANY VAMPS. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD JUST BREAK INTO SONG ALREADY I'M TIRED OF PLAYING THE SAME DUMB 3 NOTES OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER. I think the introduction to Hard Knock Life takes 2 and half hours.

His state of the union address would just be him standing at a podium while they wheel a dude in an alien suit out.

He proceeds to punch the alien in the face...."welcome to Earf".

    kinda, but not really

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_smith#Personal_life
Smith has said he has studied multiple religions, including Scientology, and he has said many complimentary things about Scientology and other faiths. Despite his praise of Scientology, Smith said "I just think a lot of the ideas in Scientology are brilliant and revolutionary and non-religious"[28][29] and "Ninety-eight percent of the principles in Scientology are identical to the principles of the Bible.... I don't think that because the word someone uses for spirit is 'thetan' that the definition becomes any different."[30] He has denied having joined the Church of Scientology, saying "I am a Christian. I am a student of all religions, and I respect all people and all paths."[31] Smith gave $1.3 million to charities in 2007, of which $450,000 went to two Christian ministries, and $122,500 went to three Scientology organizations; the remaining beneficiaries included "a Los Angeles mosque, other Christian-based schools and churches, and [...] the Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Center in Israel".[32] Smith and his wife have also founded a private elementary school in Calabasas, California, the New Village Leadership Academy, which has attracted controversy and speculation over its use of Study Technology, a teaching methodology developed by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology.[33]
