Yet Another Student Loans Thread (YASLT)

Alt because I don't know how safe I should be. But here goes.
I took out a loan with a bank awhile ago, probably four or five years. That particular bank's student loans department has since closed, and now any time i try to call their department i am directed to a number which is a voice mail that hangs up on you when you finish listening to the message. The message directs you to this website:

nslds(dot)ed(dot)gov

I log into that website, and I see the federal loans I have but not the private one. I have called multiple departments with this bank, but nobody seems to be able to find my information. According to them, I don't exist. So I ask you this, Penny Arcade, what do I do? I have the feeling it's still waiting somewhere, but I can't find it. How do I find it, or is it really gone, as I would love to believe?

Check your credit report and see if the loan is on and if so who owns it. They likely sold the loan to another bank.

Where would I do that? All the places I see to check credit report seem pretty sketchy. It should be free to do so, right?

Once again you have worked some sort of common-sense miracle, Penny Arcade H/A forums. I am in your obfuscated debt, for my problem is (at least partially) solved. Thank you.

Fitting, considering that the nature of your debt itself is obfuscated.
