Your views on Deus Ex for college research project.
Hey all, I'm doing a computer game developement course in college, we've all been tasked to come up with a computer game idea and mine is a cyberpunk RPG. I won't exactly list details of it but this is for research. And where better to ask about games than penny arcade! I personally love Deus Ex but I can't use my own words as research. I have to research it because it is the closest competitor to my game aside from the yet unreleased prequel.
Why do people view Deus Ex as a great game?
What flaws does the game have?
Personal favorite bits of the game itself?
Why do you believe reviewers at the time loved Deus Ex so much as a game?
Any and all views are welcome, I'd only ask for no swearing, mostly because my college teacher's have to read my research at some stage and I want to keep it as professional as possible if that makes sense.
Yeah you'd probably be better off looking up reviews and op-ed pieces on it yourself, stuff that you can source.
If you want to know why reviewers at the time thought it was good, read their reviews, it should pretty much be spelled out. Likewise for the flaws, but since this is partly to do with game design, you should be able to come to your own conclusions about that yourself.
Just look at the game objectively in today's context, see what works, what doesn't, what's changed with people's expectations of FPS's, RPG's and hybrids thereof.
Deus Ex was a kicking off point or at least heavy influence for quite a few games today (which I'm not going to name because they should be readily apparent). Look at those. See how they've deviated from the formula, or didn't, and why.
Also, Deus Ex wasn't the only cyberpunk RPG (Not even the only First Person cyberpunk RPG), and if we're talking in terms of aesthetics, certainly not the only cyberpunk game. You need to be able to classify what makes cyberpunk unique and what that kind of setting does for a game, what it brings to it.
I realise this doesn't really answer any of your questions, but I am trying to help out here.
