Pray tell, dooders, what would happen if I snap off my harddrive and take it over to a friends to play on his 360? I would expect we would have to keep it offline but could I then use all my DLC games and what not on his system with no problems?

Not quite...
Taking JUST your hard drive allows access to your saves, but any DLC or XBLA game will revert to Demo status if it can't confirm that you are you via online. When you download something it is tied to your system ID number as well. If you want offline access to DLC/XBLA you're going to have to lug your entire system over to his place.
You can snap your HDD on his console and go on Live just fine. Then you do have access to all your DLC and XBLA stuff. The only thing you won't have access to is your friend's profile unless he saves it off to a USB or MU beforehand. It's actually pretty handy and you won't get in trouble for signing in to Live after taking your HDD from your 360 to his.
Yeah, as long as you brought your profile with you it should work fine (unless you've transferred games across consoles, in which case they're a lot more locked).

Could that be why I can't seem to do that with my 360 HDD? If I bring it over to a friend's place and plug it into their Xbox, I can't access my Live profile at all, it doesn't show up. Though the profiles I've created that are just local show up fine. I've had to go through quite a few Xbox's due to them breaking and I also upgraded to a bigger drive and used that HDD transfer tool/software that came with it. I even tried transfering my Live Profile to a Memory Unit and bringing that to a friend's place but it still didn't work. Any other ideas?
That doesn't make any sense. If you copy your profile to a USB / MU and plug it into any 360 you should be able to see it, select it, and log in to Live (assuming the 360 you're on has internet access).

Nope, doesn't work. The profile doesn't appear unless it's plugged into my own Xbox, whether I have the profile on a MU or my HDD.
What happens when you try to recover your gamertag?
It's been a while since I tried, so I don't really remember. Either it didn't work or we didn't want to wait that long to play on the Xbox. I usually only lug my HDD to someone else's place if we want to play Rock Band, since I have a ton of downloaded songs for it.
I sent an email to MS Support, so we'll see what response they give me.
