I dunno I'm more of a Discphile though. Always nice finding any retail release of a game I'm looking for. WAIT, does this website have automatic upgrades for games so they'll work on Vista SP2 and 7? Steam might be better for me for those very very old games which could fall under Abandonware.
This is not true, actually. The GoG staff takes the effort to update games to make them run on modern operating systems before selling them. The publishers do not. In a choice between Steam and GoG, go for GoG.
Also, I know you like disks, but many of the games on GoG are difficult to get in hardcopy nowadays and typically won't run well on modern operating systems anyway. You'll short yourself on some real gems if you pass up GoG.
I'd also like to rant about the legality of abandonware, and the term in general, but I won't. ;-)
I agree. You should play Cave Story. It's really fantastic if you like platform games. Spelunky is another great one in a somewhat kinda not really similar vein.
Oh! Oh! Minecraft!
You have no idea. Or maybe you do? It's about building massive forts with LEGOs in a fantasy world while being stalked by zombies. It's about tunneling into the dark unknown and finding lava caves. It's randomly generated and has multiplayer where people build massive [strike]statues of sexual organs[/strike] floating castles and remake scenes from Bioshock by building underwater and it's really fantastic.
Edit on the edit: Oh, you already said you weren't interested. Oh, well. It was my GOTY 2010 so it was worth a shot.
Just so I can put something on my shelf and actually have a physical factory produced copy instead of just a download. YES, I do prefer being a discphile where the majority of the time owning a retail physical release instead of a digital download. More of my age, collecting habits and just the feeling of ownership.
What'll happen when Steam isn't around anymore in a couple decades?
Not interested in Star Wars anymore. Yes I'm selling Galactic Battlegrounds - Complete Saga.
I'm not trying to convince you to go digital, because I prefer discs myself, and have only bought proper digital titles via GoG*. What I'm trying to convince you to do is to not waste your money on the C&C pack. Its just not worth it. I bought it, its pretty unnecessary. I can't imagine someone spending time playing the old C&C games anymore, Generals is bested by every other RTS and Renegade is remarkable only for its theme. This is coming from someone who grew up on C&C and considers it one of their favourite game franchises of the 90's.
*This is because GoG is amazing and they deserve all of our monies in their pockets. They do the gaming world a huge service with great support, full functionality on modern systems and they're always bringing in the best old games. (edit: Frem knows whats up with GoG. Definitely worth at least visiting their site and seeing what they've got, their support values, etc.)
Anyways, STALKER is amazing. Get it. And don't listen to Klash where Clear Sky is concerned. It has the best STALKER vs STALKER tactical shooting. Clear Sky Complete fixes everything that was seriously broken. Clear Sky also has the best modding potential and is the best looking of the three games. SoC is the classic that really hasn't been surpassed in a lot of ways. Call of Pripyat really emphasizes the questing and exploration of artifact fields. So really all three games have their place. Owning all of them isn't a bad idea, or you can hit up the STALKER thread for more opinions and pick and choose the ones that appeal to you.
How so? Just because it has a broken spawn system causing an excess of dudes to shoot and breaking the main component of the game entirely?
I found the gunplay no different than SoC or CoP, which is to say its really, really, really, good. How it'd be "better" than the other two, though, is beyond me. For the record, my opinions are based off vanilla versions (plus official patches) of the three games. Mods can bugger off in terms of objective judgement, and CS is a big poop smear on the series' namesake by vanilla/patched standards.
Also, Complete broke my game. It won't launch for me, as much as I'd love to play a non-suck version of CS. I was really looking forward to finally taking that main bandit base and not have it instantly spawn back the entire horde.
Might I ask why you aren't interested in Mass Effect? It just seems like it would be right up your alley. Have you played it before?
No idea just seeing tons of different threads on various websites solely devoted to the women characters and excludes alot from the game. Yeah seems interesting but would be more for passing playing I guess. I'm one of those 360 owners who go "Mass Effect? Okay sure fine." then play other games. Maybe a passing interest to see what the hype is about. Course I'm a slowpoke gamer especially going for great prices. BUT I did do the Collector's Edition for New Vegas (360) and still happy about it.
New Vegas was great, put in a ton of hours in and as I already mentioned, first DLC hit so I sold the vanilla of it for store credit. Re-buying when the GotYE is released which I did the same exact thing with FALLOUT 3.
Only Star Wars game I still like, excluding Rogue Squadron series, is Knights of the Old Republic. I'll be selling all my Star Wars shit soon and no I don't care about the upcoming Blu-ray for it.
The game itself can be completed in no time at all, and the story will keep you going until the end if that's all you're worried about. I don't mean to try and change your mind (it is your time, after all) but I think you'll actually really enjoy the game. You don't even have to use any of the women characters if you don't want to talk to them. There's a reason there's a ton of threads on the game, and why it was PA's GOTY last year: It's really good.
But again, it's merely a suggestion. There's a TON of games to play with a nice machine like yours... I just think you'll like it.
I've only played CS Complete, which is pretty vanilla as far as mods go. I haven't tried CS in a vanilla state. The Complete mod for CS focuses more on fixing the broken stuff, smoothing out irritations (that machine gun nest as you enter Cordon for the first time for example) than actually expanding the gameplay or anything. From what I saw of CS Complete before my last computer had its own personal Chernobyl, STALKERs in combat worked together moreso than they did in SoC, STALKER on STALKER combat is far more ubiquitous in CS than the other two games (especially considering CoP, the lack of gunfights in that game is a bit of a letdown), so if you enjoy that aspect of STALKER, CS has it in spades. So, CS is better for tactical shooting.
I'm not telling you that you have to like CS, Klash. It does get irritating to see you go around bad mouthing the game when there is no reason to do so. So mods aren't your thing. That puts you in the minority, and that goes double for the STALKER series. Clear Sky has a nice selection of quality mods that make it just as viable an entry into the series as any of the others.
Why is GoG good? When they released a Moto GP game that did work right, they gave full refunds to their customers, they also gave out gifts to those who were with them from the beta and if those people already had that gift, they gave them another.
You don't need to log in to play your games so that makes it better than steam.

Don't forget a pile of Duke Nukem games including Duke 3D Atomic Edition, the Decent series, One Whole Unit Blood, Jagged Alliance everything, Fucking Independence Fucking Wars, Tyrian 2000 for free, and did I mention Goddamn Independence Goddamn Wars?
And probably a bunch other stuff you never thought you'd get the chance to play for so cheap. And no DRM. And awesome customer support.
If you're at all a graphics whore (like me), skip the first two Thief games and go straight for Deadly Shadows.
Ignore all the haters, DS is a great game that's awesome and enjoyable all on its own.
I grew up in the 8-bit/16-bit era so not really a graphics whore. Well certain games can make or break the graphics if applicable.;-)

Amazon is a good place to look, like Synthesis mentioned. I managed to pick up a two pack of Syndicate Wars and Warhammer: Dark Omen for something like 15 bucks not long ago. I was mainly after Sydicate Wars but the Warhammer game turned out to be quite good too, even though it can be rage inducing. But then it wouldn't be Warhammer if it wasn't. The pack was new in the box too, some kind of EA Classics reissue.

Let's see:
X-COM covered, Deus Ex mentioned, Mass Effect praised, seems like the current games I like bit is covered.
There's some other stuff worth a look for dirt cheap. Republic Commando's a solid shooter with an excellent squad, AAAAAa(sic) a reckless disregard for gravity is unique and amazing, Marathon's free these days if you like really old school shooters (but even if you don't, skim the plot somewhere. Good fun to be had in that cast.)

Damn it. I really wish GoG could get on that one.
Would be nice if they had the option for the 4CD version or the DVD-ROM version. I have the 4 disc release.
Still installing all The Lord of the Rings games I have.
EDIT: Battlechest? I honestly hope there's gonna be a WarCraft IV. WoW doesn't interest me one bit.
Green dots are games I've played. Blacked out games I'm not interested in.
Well, the Dark forces and jedi outcast games were good old school shooter action for me but the tediousness of some of the later force levels got on my nerves so good call on avoiding them.
There's a game called the Guild 2. It has some expansions and its similar the sims except set in the renaissance, you raise a family, sticking to 3 members to control at a time and try to survive and accomplish some goals

Okay I found on the spindle and the rest of my room retail discs of: (Installed all which worked and majority of these never played. Except for a large portion of Nightfire and completed Max Payne before.)
007: Nightfire
Arcanum
AREA 51
Call of Juarez
GUN
Indigo Prophecy
Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude
Max Payne
Neverwinter Nights including Expansions
Neverwinter Nights 2
Penumbra
Rollercoaster Tycoon Trilogy and Expansions
Sid Meier's PIRATES!
Yeah, I have to reiterate going to GoG.com and getting everything you haven't beaten off the best sellers list.
Each game you buy and download installs from a single executatble and each one is optimized to work with modern systems. Since you are discophile, do what i did and burn them to disk. I have half my collection on a dvd (which I stupidly left back in America).
I already installed Baldur's Gate II.
Seems like the burn to disc would be a very good idea since I have a spindle of 100 DVD-Rs. Good to go already, for now.

Same friend also lent me AREA 51, Farenheit, Arcanum, GUN, Call of Juarez, PREY and Penumbra.
Also, Carth.
