I'm an apparently crazy person who just couldn't get into BC2(PC), so I'm not sure if this is something for me to look out for or not. I just didn't like the controls and the way the guns felt.
Well then you're in luck, because BC2 was nothing like Battlefield.
I've been hearing some talk about the features of BF3. Apparently explosions will knock you over, and you can drag downed players to safety.
That's really fucking cool.
less control. Bad. Bad DICE.
I'm really not expecting this to be good. Sounds like a lot of focus on single player, no mod tools, four classes, modern setting, comparisons to CoD, the explosion knockdown thing sounds dumb and annoying, and no recent battlefield game has impressed me. Only gonna buy this on a really cheap sale or if a lot of people who were expecting it to be shit say that they are surprised by it.

Well you are the most depressing person in the world. You probably shouldn't run on a treadmill, it might saw your legs off.
Seriously though, explosions knocking you over mean you lose control? What the fuck man, that doesn't even make sense, Dieing makes you lose control should they take out dieing? Maybe they are tweaking explosions to be less deadly (they are fucking deadly in BF2) but now to counteract that they knock you over. Hell maybe they ONLY knock you over in multiplayer? You don't know, you don't know anything yet and you are already writing this game off as bargain bin trash.
Well my excitement is based on the previous Battlefield game, and this is a return to that, and made for the PC. We already know all the console crap will be cut out of this game.
I just hope they really try and reinforce teamwork and cooperation in this somehow since that really is what this game does better than something like CoD. Where that game is just a deathmatch arena with no teamwork Battlefield actually requires teamwork and cooperation between players to be successful. I would just like to see vehicles and classes all work together in certain ways, like the blackhawk did in BF2.

No I'm not, I'm saying I won't enjoy it. Of course we don't know much about it yet, but pretty much everything that we do know sounds bad to me. And if they only knocked you over in multiplayer that would be even worse. Pretty much the worst case thing would be getting caught anywhere in an explosion's radius stuns you for 2 seconds or something so you can see someone walk up and shoot you. It could be a lot less than this, down to just making you go prone and some sorta screen blood effect or something, but I can't see it not being annoying.

Sorry I meant singleplayer, ONLY in singleplayer. I am expecting a big nerf to explosives, sort of like Bad Company did but probably a little bit more even. I mean this isn't exactly a fast paced game and I am guessing along with the explosion is going to be a done of dirt and smoke and all that, probably just trying to make it more cinematic I suppose. We have no idea if this is multiplayer or not yet since a lot of what they did say was single player.

I hope the BC2 Assault Mode comes back in force. Conquest mode is just okay, but that concept isn't to fun anymore. I like having that objective driven orient to keep things from going stale.
I think I mostly want tighter shooting and controls. Loved BC2 but it always felt a bit floaty or something, BC1 and MoH were the same. It's pretty much the one thing that CoD still does better, they have supremely tight shooting and movement.
If Dice can clean that up for 3 then I'll be happy.

They said a lot of things. Like that 1943 PC was coming out soon for 2 years. Or that they were working on porting karkland to BC2. I'm taking any non-engine related PR from them with a healthy dose of skepticism now.
The only difference between their statements about BF3 being "designed for PC" and the stuff they were saying about that for BC2 is that BF3 supposedly has 64 person maps.
objectives are a nice thought but with bc2 it usually just turned into a stalemate with spamming everything at MCOMs and the odd breakthrough, rinse and repeat

squad based multiplayer shooters have tried the Commander idea before.
The thing is, you can't force players to obey the commander, and its only really fun to be the commander if you're being obeyed. So what ends up happening is Tribes 1 and 2, where the command interfaces never get used.
Except in organised clan games, I assume. Which is always a great regret of mine, not becoming more involved in Tribes 2 competitive play when I had the chance.
Helicopters in BF2 were fucking amazing, it took a little getting use to but once you got it down you felt like a god. A metal god with blades and rockets.
I could spin in perfect circles around a tank, directly above it, maintaining altitude and attitude. I could go in between any building, I could fly through the streets at around 15 feet between buildings. I could flip upside down during a helo dog fight, letting my gunner see upward to fire off a rocket at the helicopter that though it had the advantage. I could instantly flip my helicopter around and juke behind buildings. I had control, and that is what makes video games fun.
That actually sounds pretty broken.
And BC2 is tailor made for the consoles and plays perfectly. DICE was just being nice to the PC for this one or expecting extra cash. I expect Battlefield 3 to be very PC centric though.
Helicopters in BF2 were the absolute definition of broken. They really were.

Unlocks that confer an actual gameplay advantage are fucking stupid and need to not be in competitive shooter games, ever, unless they are quick to get (not necessarily easy to get, but quick).
A competent commander didn't need to be obeyed in BF2 to be useful, he just had to spam his radar and uav abilities. And drop supply crates on snipers.
And helicopters weren't nearly as bad as jets.
EDIT: And I'm going to agree with you on unlocks.

Helicopters were much worse than jets if they weren't being countered by a good jet pilot.
A jet could come over and strafe you or bomb you, but a helicopter would just sit around firing at you forever + infinity.

I liked helis in BF2, the transport was my favorite vehicle.
A jet could come over and strafe you or bomb you forever with absolutely no way to deal with it, but a helicopter would just sit around firing at you until your heli hit it with a TV missile.
This is what I saw happen more often in BF2.

So I'm guessing only 24 people on Xbox live. I wonder why "Frontlines: Fuel of War" had up to 50 people on LIVE (with dedicated servers) and no one else followed suit.
The co-op does make me smile though. Loved that in Vegas 2.
Does anyone know what the hell is up with the commander? I keep hearing conflicting reports, and I'm going to be rather upset if they just totally axe the commander role.

Helicopters were easily killed though, a single humvee or a well placed rocket easily took them out. A jet could just strafe from safety and almost never die. Only bad teams got camped by helicopters, that is unless it was a clan match. This was probably the worst part, games were decided basically by who had the better pilot, and for maps without a jet the better helicopter pilot. It was stupid, the game shouldn't depend on one person. They got a lot better after the nerf when they lowered the TV missile range though.
I am just trying to think of a way that they could balance out jets and helos and still have them be fun, they were probably the highest skilled vehicles in the game so there should be a reward.
Maybe if helicopters only got 4 TV missiles before they had to go back and rearm. Rearming could take maybe 10-20 seconds, I don't know. That presents the problem of camping the rearm pad with another helicopter or a single C4 guy. Something along those lines though, to force the helicopter out of the fight eventually. Hell just reducing its effectiveness while maintaining the skill level of the helicopter is much more appealing, make the TV guided missiles smaller...maybe even make it so you have to hit a specific part of a tank for a kill? Not sure how to make that realistic unless you hit the turret which is what you will always hit, but maybe that is hard still? I like that idea actually. Make it so you have to hit the turret for a kill with a missile, 20 second reload time on TV missiles.

AA guns for dealing with choppers, SAMs for jets. Make it so SAMs can't lock onto choppers and AA bullets can't damage jets and voila, balance. Both player controlled, of course.
Choppers in BF2 had a realistic flight model, but not realistic physics, so that's why you could pull off some pretty ridiculous stuff with them.
Basically they should give them a good flight model and physics and they should be easy enough to learn, but hard to master.
I don't want to see bullshit flight model and physics like the Huey in BC2 Vietnam. I just feel stupid playing a game with a somewhat realistic setting and see a magic floating chopper, it breaks all immersion.
