SHIT, so after 3 days playing on sandbox with Vienna, leaving the game minimized overnight, all was going well, my 3 bus lines were profitable, the metro made a ton of money and I even had a slightly profitable water bus line and a slightly unprofitable helicopter line, as in it would actually make some money when the economy was going well but lose a little the rest of the time. So I decide to change my main bus line to trams, did everything while paused, built the tracks, changed the bus stops to tram, improved a little on the stop layout and as I press start for the game to resume nothing, then a black screen and it crashes to the desktop...
Well I had a lot of fun with it, I will now probably get back to my backlog to clear some of it for when this is released. This game is still definitely a day one purchase for me, just waiting for it to show up on steam to grab it...
One of the keys to success has been their refusal to take the advise of others. They have been told that hardcore PC gaming is dying, that it would be suicide to go into publishing, that digital distribution is way off in the future and that the online free-to-play market is overcrowded. Yet, that's the path they have walked and it has taken them very far from humble beginnings.
Well I´m weak so I decided to try to see how well I would do in Tutorial Town, and after Vienna it was really easy. Started by taking a loan to build a subway from the airport to the main plaza, with one stop at the stadium. The line was profitable enough to pay for itself and the loan, so I started building trams on small circular paths to maximize covered area and to bring more people to the subway. First one was to the auto factory and train station, then around the main plaza and to the west and then southern part of the town. After this I was already making 3-4k+ monthly, so I built another tram to the west and a bus line to the houses on the northwest. After that a barely profitable bus from those industries near the airport to the subway and finally a tram to the northeast since 2 trams took care of the job of I imagine at least 4 buses. I decided to quit with a coverage of 88%, approval of 90% and more money than I could spend. Here is how it looked.
Now I really need to uninstall this beta or else I know I will continue playing it and nothing else, I am now afraid of how it will be when the game is released...
So, I guess this game is for people who played Railroad Tycoon and said "back the fuck up, fuckers. You know what would make this game 99x better? Graphs."
But, Railroad Tycoon did have graphs... Well, the second one did at least.
This game looks pretty cool; too bad my aging computer is just below the requirements. I'm tempted to give it a shot anyways, but as far as my productivity is concerned not being able to play this is a good thing.
Edit: Heh, someone on steam screwed up, if you preorder you can download and play the full game right now. They will probably block this in the morning though...
Can we talk some strategy? I keep going in the red on the first campaign mission. They want you to start out with buses and then build a tram. Looking at my final vehicle roster it seems like the buses break about even or a little less, and the tram rakes in the cash. What are the buses even doing for me here and why would I want them?
Ok so according to the devs posting on the paradox forums the version for download is not the release version, the game went gold just yesterday. They are still checking to see if they will have steam block it or not and they warned that the save games may get corrupted when the final release version is launched.
Yesssssssss I bought a new graphics card for this.
Despite the fact that no-one got on my buses in the beta. I built a line from the workers' terraced houses in the east of the map (Vienna), to all the way around the industrial estate. But no-one ever got on..
Well it is actually a beta not a demo. Here is a direct link, you can also find it on Fileplanet.
Edit: It seems they took the game down from the store page, probably to solve this little "accident". The game is still on my games list and is playable though.
Uh, having recently played OpenTTD, it's closer to Traffic Giants than Transport Tycoon.
I noticed this myself. I was a little disappointed with OpenTTD since most of the modules for many scenarios have been lost to the void, but CiM seems to be local city only.
So I downloaded a newer beta last night? Figures. I noticed something was weird when black sedans kept parking on the road for days without any traffic ahead impeding their progress.
This is great and all, but playing OpenTTD really makes me just want another, better-looking Transport Tycoon even more. That said, I haven't had the chance to really sit down and start looking through CiM, and I kind of don't want to until official release - I have plenty of other stuff to look at in the meantime.
We should have an OpenTTD thread. I started playing it again today and I'm having trouble cause the font is small and I can't find a way to make it bigger.
I need like a tutorial on how to not suck at trains. Trains are so versatile but I am bad and as mentioned above only seem to manage when making one-way loops.
And why can't I put cows or iron ore on airplanes? I could drain these farms and mines dry if I didn't have to use trains or *shudder* trucks.

:?
planes arnt really used for cows or iron ore now are they? not really profitable. they barely make a profit in the real world with passengers and mail.
trains are king in TTD. Even trucks and trams are fun in openTTD. Just for fun i'll do a truck only company.
practice with trains on maps with no competitors. easiest way to start is to haul coal from mines to power plants. Build a 2 track station at the mine. then lay a route to a power plant a fair distance away as flat and with as few curves as possible. at the end you can do a 1 track station.
If someone makes a TTD thread i can help out. ive been playing it for a LONG time. still have my original DOS CD for it.

OpenTTD is pretty awesome, at one point I was hosting a server for me and my brother just to have fun and tool around on.
i dare say its bad ass. and one being into trains, such as myself, there is a lovely american locomotive plugin so you dont have to play with the odd euro engines.
god... im still at 0.71 R2... i havent played in a while
I just learned from that wiki that I've been making RORO stations, which seems like the way to go in a lot of circumstances. There is soooooooooo much stuff about signaling that I need to learn wow.
Just keep hauling that mineral away. make a moderate size train and tell it to wait for a full load. the higher % of load hauled, the more it will produce.
ive never been a fan of passenger transport. i never do RORO stations except for the rare occasion i'll have a passenger train with 3 stations on its route. I'll do Terminus type routes with 1 or more trains going between 2 cities.
Example: This is a terminus station in a large town. I have a double track main line with pre-signals along the route. these separate the area between each signal into blocks. So a train can travel down the line close behind another train and no one will have to stop for another. Keep in mind each track goes one way between the town, like a road. One line for east, one line for west and so on.
and here is the other connecting town. Note the next line running up to the next town. same idea with that.

what? the enhanced signaling is amazing. havent played open ttd in a while, but those presignals... mmmmm...
there was a pretty handy guide to the signals...

Transport Tycoon still obsesses me.
PC gaming dying, casual gamers taking over, nuh uh.
Well I had a lot of fun with it, I will now probably get back to my backlog to clear some of it for when this is released. This game is still definitely a day one purchase for me, just waiting for it to show up on steam to grab it...
This should be an interesting read to you then...
I specially like this part...

I'll stick to sandboxes for now, methinks

That´s actually the name of one of steam´s achivements, I know I laughed...
