I wrote to Brian Jacques once. Spent ages putting this letter together. Got really excited when I got a reply, but it was just a poster for his next book, he didn't write anything. It's understandable I guess as he probably got a butt-ton of fanmail from kids, but I was pretty gutted. I think that was about the time I stopped reading his stuff.
2 Tbls unsalted butter
1 Large onion, chopped
2 Med. leeks, washed well and chopped
3 Med Potatoes, peeled and chopped
2 c vegetable stock (one 14 oz can)
1 Tsp curry powder
Salt & pepper to taste
16 Oz cooked shrimp or prawn
1 Cup milk
1. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the onion and leeks and cook, stirring, until soft, about 5 minutes (do not let the vegetables brown).
2. Add the vegetable stock. potatoes, curry powder, and salt and pepper. Cover and simmer until the potatoes are very soft 15 to 20 minutes.
3. Add the shrimp and milk and gently heat. Serve with crusty bread.
So depressed. Time to go find my audiotapes of Martin the Warrior, which was my favorite. I still remember my parents taking my sister and I to the signing for "Legend of Luke" in Austin... these books were a big reason why I became an avid reader.

You may learn that one day to your sorrow.

I read the fuck out of these as a kid. Taggerung was the last one I could get through.
I have a picture of grade-school Cosmic and Brian Jacques. My grandfather took it at a book signing. I was all "UHM HI THE OUTCAST OF REDWALL IS MY FAVORITE BOOK!" and he was all "Oh, that's nice." He was really funny, and in his little speech before the book signing he just told jokes. It was great.
I read so many of these books, even after I reached the age where I realized they weren't very good, I still kept it up for 4 books or so. These were seriously the books I read for a good quarter of my life. If I wasn't reading the most recent redwall book, I was either reading harry potter or re-reading one of the older redwall books.
Damn this sucks.

I looked so hard for this before posting mine I do not know what happened.
Yeah, this series was my childhood along with Harry Potter. I would skim my library shelves every goddamn time to see if there was a new Redwall book, and I would consistnely finish the fucker in about three days by the time I got to the later books. These books taught me how to speedread. I haven't read one since Rakkety Tam, though.
My favorite was Pearls of Lutra btw. Sure it was a longass fetchquest but hey it was a cool one when I was ten.
What the hell was the name of the badger with the golden stripe on his face? Something hilariously obvious like "goldstripebadgerface" but he was badass as fuck.

Why do authors always look grumpy in those pictures? I took one with Neil Gaiman and he looks like he's about to murder me. I swear he was the nicest person in the world both before and after the picture was taken.

FFFFF Fuck this world! These were like the only books I would read as a kid. I think the last one I read was Taggerung. There was also a MUD or something based on them that I remember playing over telnet. Oh to be 12 again...
Gonna go listen to my Legend of Luke book-on-tape and cry.

Maybe I should remedy that. They probably haven't dated well but... it'd feel right, somehow
It was awesome

mom gets killed
dad goes out for revenge, also dies
he gets enslaved
gran dies (right?)
love of his life killed
and Martin still doesn't become embittered
that, ladies and gentlemen, is a role model
also, I can't help but be reminded of Terry Pratchett's precarious health
Also a personal hero dies in front of him, and he's brutally wounded in a fight to the death with a freaking bobcat.
yeah, a sudden death would be TOTALLY unexpected for captain eats pizza all day
My wife still gets me a new Jacques book every Christmas
like, dang
Gonna go listen to my Legend of Luke book-on-tape and cry.
celebrities that have died this year: Dick Winters, Pete Postlethwaite, Jack LaLanne, Brian Jacques
But Brian Jacques basically WAS my childhood and the first time I read "A MARLFOX IS SLAIN" it blew my mind.
I still remember most of the characters' names and stuff. Gonna have to reread those as soon as I finish the Malazan books.
