I wrote to Brian Jacques once. Spent ages putting this letter together. Got really excited when I got a reply, but it was just a poster for his next book, he didn't write anything. It's understandable I guess as he probably got a butt-ton of fanmail from kids, but I was pretty gutted. I think that was about the time I stopped reading his stuff.

I think the last one I read was The Long Patrol, never read Marlfox or beyond

Maybe I should remedy that. They probably haven't dated well but... it'd feel right, somehow

So depressed. Time to go find my audiotapes of Martin the Warrior, which was my favorite. I still remember my parents taking my sister and I to the signing for "Legend of Luke" in Austin... these books were a big reason why I became an avid reader.

I read the fuck out of these as a kid. Taggerung was the last one I could get through.

I have a picture of grade-school Cosmic and Brian Jacques. My grandfather took it at a book signing. I was all "UHM HI THE OUTCAST OF REDWALL IS MY FAVORITE BOOK!" and he was all "Oh, that's nice." He was really funny, and in his little speech before the book signing he just told jokes. It was great.

I read so many of these books, even after I reached the age where I realized they weren't very good, I still kept it up for 4 books or so. These were seriously the books I read for a good quarter of my life. If I wasn't reading the most recent redwall book, I was either reading harry potter or re-reading one of the older redwall books.

    Damn this sucks.

Yeah, this series was my childhood along with Harry Potter. I would skim my library shelves every goddamn time to see if there was a new Redwall book, and I would consistnely finish the fucker in about three days by the time I got to the later books. These books taught me how to speedread. I haven't read one since Rakkety Tam, though.

My favorite was Pearls of Lutra btw. Sure it was a longass fetchquest but hey it was a cool one when I was ten.

    seriously

    mom gets killed
dad goes out for revenge, also dies
    he gets enslaved
    gran dies (right?)
    love of his life killed

and Martin still doesn't become embittered
that, ladies and gentlemen, is a role model

also, I can't help but be reminded of Terry Pratchett's precarious health

I wouldn't actually care if George R. R. Martin died, it's not like he's planning on finishing his series anyway.

But Brian Jacques basically WAS my childhood and the first time I read "A MARLFOX IS SLAIN" it blew my mind.

I still remember most of the characters' names and stuff. Gonna have to reread those as soon as I finish the Malazan books.
