Okay so the other night i take a lady friend home for some fun times. We make out and she gives me head (it was all kinds of classy). Anyway she has the remnants of a coldsore which i only sort of noticed in the morning. What's the likely hood that i have caught it on my face? and could i have caught it on my penis? Or is it like only the real genital herpes that you can catch there, or is this how genital herpes is formed?
any info would be great :(

thanks

There's nothing you can really do except wait. If you notice anything that might be an outbreak, go ahead and go in and get tested. If a couple weeks go by and you haven't seen anything, you can still go in and get a blood test, but it won't necessarily be reliable inside a month depending on what type you (maybe) were exposed to.

ed: the other thing you should do (if only to provide peace of mind) is call up the lady and do the history thing

    Hi,

You do not provide enough information about this encounter, did you use a condom?. It is too soon to find out if you actually got an infection, there are two types of Herpes viruses, and both can be acquired through mucus membranes.

There is a blood test that is normally used to rule out infection, but you need to wait 12-16 weeks for antibodies to appear.

This is not the end of the world. If you are still worried, you can request a prophylactic treatment just for some peace of mind.

Somewhere between 50 and 60 percent of the US population tests positive for HSV-1. It's likely you already have oral herpes and don't even realize it. While it is possible to have HSV-1 outbreaks on your genitals, it is fairly rare, and the likelihood the woman had a cold sore caused by HSV-2 on her mouth is even smaller. The likelihood that you contracted HSV-2 from this is ridiculously low.

You shouldn't wait for symptoms to get tested. You should both get tested so you aren't just guessing. Unless you're not in a relationship with her and it was just a one night thing, then you're not really in a position to suggest she get tested and should just focus on getting tested yourself. However if this was "just the other night" then it's very unlikely any symptoms you have are from anything she gave you.

Cold sores are caused by HSV-1, genital herpes is usually caused by HSV-2. HSV-2 is really really sucky at living anywhere other than the genitals. HSV-1 does occasionally manage to infect a person in the genitals but it isn't very good at it.

So you were most likely exposed to HSV-1. That virus does cause cold sores and rarely causes very mild genital disease. If you are really worried go to your doctor.

A test so early would be negative if he actually got anything from the woman because his body cannot produce antibodies in such a short time. However, the test would be positive if he got it from someone else in the past.

Also, some people test positive for just one type, or both, but never show any symptons, this is commonly called Asymptomatic Herpes.

Which is exactly why I said he should get tested as his symptoms are almost certainly not from someone he had sex with so recently. Unless his idea of "the other night" is actually a couple of weeks ago.

edit: Pink, no. Do not wait for signs of an outbreak to get tested. If you're going to be sexually active, the responsible thing to do is get tested before you have sex again.

One thing before you lock this up.

Even when engaging in oral sex, you should be using a condom if you aren't in an exclusive sexual relationship where both partners have been tested.

Absolutely possible you can get it on your dick. But the good news here is that it'd likely be HSV1 not HSV2. I've been going 5 years without an HSV1 outbreak on my dick despite having an initial outbreak. The initial outbreak was terrible though. Almost as bad as having mono. Bad times then but good times now.

herpes is most transferrable in the day/hours before a sore appears.

many doctors will not even test for HSV because there is largely no point. lots of people have it, there's no cure, it's typically not a big problem, etc etc
