Man, I simply could not play assault when I first started playing. The class seemed to basically be Medic, except medics never reload and get millions of points from healing and rez and can solo whole squads because of the bottomless clips and have super range with the heavy barrel perk, and they don't need a pansy grenade launcher.
Then I unlocked Magnum, and suddenly assault is the best class ever.
What the hell?

Uh. Something must be wrong, cause I play BC2 like, several times a week on my 360. Never had any problems finding a game.
Yeah, I can't imagine BC2 having dried up already on either console. It's one of those games that reached critical mass, which tend to keep going until the next iteration.
I didn't get the update titled "Vietnam" because I didn't want to play in Vietnam - but once I added the 1.6 GB update I was able to find games. This experience has reminded me how nice it is to forget that EA exists for awhile...
Anyways, the game is pretty awesome - can't wait to unlock my full medic gear
but is there something special about being a sniper? because I swear to god I've not been in a squad with anyone who IS NOT a sniper
Because people love to snipe! And be utterly worthless. But battle wookies up at the front lines, throwing motion mines?
I was also unable to find games on the 360 until I downloaded that 1.6gb update. I think it was all the VIP maps, maybe?

[strike]Sniper[/strike] Hill Humper isn't a class, it's just the retarded cousin of the Battle Wookie.
All except for on Cold War 1st point, where a well placed sniper has such a commanding view of the landscape that the tactical information he can provide (assuming he spots and consistently mortars the enemy *snicker*) outweighs his general uselesness as a hill humper.
And as to why a lot of people like playing sniper? Low risk, high reward. It's a lot easier playing shooting gallery than having to manage your surroundings to both kill your enemies and stay alive. Also, this false sense that your Kraft Dinner ratio has some sort of bearing on your "skill" in the game. Well in a way it does, but hill humpers playing grab-ass on a far away hill, almost entirely removed from any sort of danger negate most of the usefulness of the K : D.
So i just started playing this game today and whoa, what a learning curve! I used to play a lot of BF1942 when i was in high school but I dont remember it being so twitchy and intense. Can anyone give me some tips or link to a good website?
Also, a question. Does the medic class need to unlock its revive ability? It seems like it would be a lot easier to rack up points if I could use it.
FN2000 + magnum with a red dot sight is currently my favourite build ever. I beat shotgun guys at their own game, and any other setup... unless they get the jump on me they go down every time, and half the time just wild spraying gets them anyway. It carries enough ammo to take out clusters, too, so it's perfect for clearing the MCOM before setting. It's still decent at range, and I got the blooper for on top of that, which half the time I just shoot to get up a little puff of dust up so I can get in optimal murder range. I even got the target marker pistol on hand so that if I run into a tank I can light it up for my engineer buddies. It has totally replaced pump shotty engineer with lightwieght and armour as my go-to class.
With this build avaliable, why would anyone use shotguns?

You can use shotguns with that build, you know. If you've unlocked the 40mm shotgun, whack that on as an attachment. AEK, M9, 40mm shotgun with magnum ammo is my ultimate killing build. Try it out with the F2000 is that's your cup of tea.
I just bought BC2, got all excited and threw the disc in, installed, and updated via the auto-update. Everything was running nice, had all the settings up to top. Then I noticed the game was having a heart attack whenever menus, HUDs or similar overlays were supposed to appear. Even subtitles were spazzing out.
I look it up and find out BC2 artifacts like Hell outside of DX9. Fantastic. Does anybody know of a way to work BC2, without the overlays having seizures, in DX10? I noticed when I ran it in DX9, there was a lack of AA. I feel like I'm playing a graphically gimped game before I've even gotten past the single player intro.

Thats weird, i play in DX10 and never have those issues at all.

Need a bit more info to go on here: What's your CPU? RAM? Graphics Card? Windows Version?
And yeah, DX9 cannot do antialiasing in DX9 with the lighting engine that Frostbite uses. DX10-11 supports both AA and Frostbite's lighting engine simultaneously.

I'm nervous to drop my grenade launcher, though. It's the only long-range firepower I pack, and the only pistol I find useful is the burst shot one, which does what my FN2000 does already. Next to the FN2000 magnum, which combines insanely high rates of fire with really solid damage, shotgun of any kind feels really redundant.
I'm starting to consider 40mm smoke though, because getting up close and personal is sort of what this build does. Can you still kill people with it by hitting them with the grenade? I usually flick to the 40mm when I run dry and the enemy is still standing and wack them with the grenade, and I don't want to accidently annoy somebody with smoke.

All things considered, the worst I should be getting is slow down. Switching to DX9 wasn't as big an issue as I thought, it seems only AA is short changed. I didn't buy BC2 for the graphics, though, I bought it for the part where I get to shoot guys, I was initially just pissed the glitching got in the way of that.
I've had no issues (asides from slow down) when running various other games in DX10, and some games run perfectly in it.
I know, it's a glaringly weak link in the chain, but it's actually proved too be a stout bastard. I can run Crysis at full everything, except AA. No slow down, no stutter, not even on that final boss with effects out the ass and aliens all over the place. In fact, I've found I can run most anything topped off, sometimes I need to lower AA, but that's all. Naturally, things like PhysX don't work well, either. Pushing things onto the card just gives it a heart attack, which I learned by playing with PhysX on Arkham Asylum.

I can't say I had any issues in DX10 with menus on my GTX260. But that is a fair bit more potent than a GTS240, which is essentially a repackaged 8800GT.
It may be that DX9 is what that card is capable of...DX10 is a bit more demanding, even without AA enabled. Still doesn't explain the weird performance in menus though (maybe it's a driver issue?). I'd say try turning all the settings to off/ low, lower your resolution, and see if things improve. If it does improve, then start turning stuff back on/up and see where it starts degrading. Could help figure out if it is a hardware issue, a settings issue, or a driver one.
Like I said, DX10 doesn't always mean insta-death for my card. First thing I did was toggle this and that, try and get it to work. It seems I'll be going DX9, which isn't all that bad, since the game still looks great anyways.
Certainly better looking than most FPS I can think of.
That's weird, how are your drivers? Have you tried updating your DX?
The only problems I ever had with DX9 was that glass panes in the mounted guns were completely black, and texture flickering. Switching to DX10 removed all those problems.
Played a bit last night with friends. Had a blast, man there really isn't a better FPS than this game. The last couple of patches where they made some slight weapon adjustments (lovin the F2000) and added the new maps (conquest oasis and that new snow rush map) literally made the game perfect. The only flaw i could give them is that E will pickup kits while near an mcom.. thats alll I can think of that can still annoy me thats not a player skill problem (bad teammates r bad).. I love the gameplay, weapon balance, sound, vehicles and maps.
There really isn't a point to this post other than to say this I think this game has achieved perfection and I love it.
As silly as it sounds, this game can be terrifying. Really.
I'm running around, heading for a conquest flag, minding my own business. *crack* Sniper round whizzing by my head. So I duck behind a fence. Which starts getting shredded by fire from a few guys, since the sniper actually spotted me.
So I head for more solid cover, the fence disintegrating beside me, bullets hitting the ground around me, explosions setting my ears ringing.
With a good sound system, it is so utterly exhilarating. I am completely in love with the sound design and animation of this game.
I just picked up Surround Sound headphones and it makes this game nuts. I still suck at the game, but now I can hear people running behind me and I turn around just in time to see someone stab me in the face, but better then in the back!
Been playing more lately with my friend and having a good time over vent. We say WHOA a lot at the same time. Really do dig this game!
I just picked this up for 360. I bought it used but my VIP code still worked! My buddy bought it used and his did not
It was fun. But im getting sick of all the snipers. I just unlocked the defib as a medic and now I find myself getting killed trying to revive folks. I think I need to clear the area first. I love the squad mechanic. Playing with 3 buddies would be awesome. Me and my one friend actually dominated at times just through the mechanics of the spawn system.
Then he went all lone wolf on me and I spent half my time just trying to catch up to him then getting sniped. We worked so much better before he got antsy and a bit flustered.
That being said. Im not sure I GET the game yet. Like does capturing bases do much other then provide a new spawn point? Do you lose points if you have less bases then the other team, effectively costing you mans?
How does reviving help. Does the player not get a death on their score? Do we not lose a point? Do they get a death then get another death if they are killed right after reviving? Do we lose two points?
Being a medic is fun, but folks run around too much to heal properly, I wish it was more a one time use then a over-time thing. Then again, dropping a medipack on a group of like 5 guys all hurt gets a ton of points really quick!
Capturing bases does decrease the other team's ticket count, except not enough to entirely counter the other team having very positive kdrs.
Reviving is super helpful, restoring a ticket ensures you'll have more time to plant charges in rush, and saves someone the time of respawning and running back to the frontlines. Think of it like a kill.
So reviving does restore a ticket? How does it effect the other players K:D. I know thats not something I should worry about, but my buddies do look at that a lot, and I dont want to risk having them die twice in a row if itll count twice on their k:d.
Also, I played one round of rush and it seemed like the worst thing ever. Nothing but snipers and tanks shelling us as we defended then eventually when our spirits were broken from constant dying they moved in to plant charges. Seems like it can get out of hand pretty quick.
Yeah, every time you revive someone they don't lose a death, so it does affect their K/D ratio.
I will try to get on tonight on the PA server, I hope to see some of you there! I will try, because I might end up getting home at 11pm CST.

If you've never played a BF game before, coming into this game after it's been out a year can be pretty daunting. If you stick with it, learn a little bit about how everything works, and continue trying to help your team, it'll get much, much better.
Now here's a disorienting info dump ;-)
In conquest maps, the object is to get the other team's ticket count to zero. You can do this by killing them, and by controlling a majority of the capture points on the map. Since all of the conquest maps only have 3 or 4 Control Points, that means 2+ or 3+ to start the "ticket bleed" (slow reduction of the enemy's ticket count). If both teams control the same number of flags, there's no "bleed". The more control points your team/the enemy controls, the faster the bleed (I think the maximum bleed for controlling all points is like 1 ticket every 10 seconds, though it's normally much slower).
Also when capturing points: The speed of capturing is dictated by how many teammates you have in the capture zone ABOVE the number of enemies in the zone. For example, if you've got 3 people in a capture zone, and the enemy has 2, that capture point will change towards your team at the same speed as if you were in the zone all by yourself. If both teams have the same number of players in the zone, the capture point will stop at whatever point it's currently at in the capture process. When going for a capture, it's absolutely essential to get it back to neutral, as that prevents the other team from respawning on the point.
As for Rush....yeah, it can be pretty hit or miss sometimes. And it sounds like you were playing Arica Harbor, which can be a really disorienting map for new players, since that map starts with a heated long-range tank battle. Best advice I could give is just not to sweat it too much: most Rush games end in the defenders winning anyway. If you can find some guys to squad up with (especially more experienced players), you'll have a much better time overall, and you'll likely do much, much better. Unless the other team is highly organized, one good squad can have a huge impact on a battle.
One more thing about being a medic: Reviving teammates is all well and good, but remember that you are also a spawn point for your squad. If you're in a position to stay alive and you're in a relatively safe place, sometimes it's worth it to stay there and let your squadmates respawn on you. Yes, you'll burn a ticket or two doing that, but often it's much better than trying to revive and then getting killed, forcing your entire squad to spawn much farther away from the action.
It's too bad you're on the 360 version, as there's still a small core of PAers playing this on the PC that could certainly help you learn the ropes. There's probably still some on the 360 as well, but they don't seem to be as active in here, at least lately.
One final thing: SPOT ENEMIES. Hit that select button like your life depends on it. You'll help your team, it'll make enemies easier to kill, and it'll make you better than 95% of the selfish idiots that don't do it because they're afraid of having THEIR kills "stolen".

Wait..what?
If I hit select I spot enemies? What does this do? Have them show on the radar? Or announce a vague description of where they are ("Infantry at the forward base!")?
This sounds fantastic. My favorite gaming moments involve me and my buddy absolutely wrecking shit in FPS by calling out and focusing down the enemy one by one like badasses.
I brought in a few friends of mine to this game not too long ago (about a month ago) and they've thanked me ever since. Despite starting so late, they are still incredibly competitive when they play and never complain that they are missing X gun or Y perk.
This game still gives me a huge smile on my face, best money I've ever spent.

I must convince my friends who havent bought it to do so. The team-work features are so great.
Wasnt there a commander type role in BF2? Is that absent from BC2?
