I like calling it Singles Awareness Day. Other than that, I don't think of it at all.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

Well, the Irish are known as great lovers.
Wait, no...that's not right. Drinkers. I mean drinkers.
You know, when I was young and single (read: 18), I didn't think Valentine's Day was all that bad. There are so many single people out there that bemoan how awful it is to get reminded that you don't have someone to fall asleep with at night. Now I'm getting the feeling that this is much more justified a sensation for people in their late 20s and 30s. It must be kind of depressing, nearing middle age and feeling bombarded by such commercialization literally dripping from every nook and cranny.
All I know is that I gave my girlfriend a sapphire and diamond necklace, a Slytherin scarf a friend of mine knitted, and a huge dried and pressed maple leaf we both found outside my apartment.
One of the funnest things I've done for Valentine's was buying a bunch of strawberries and some cooking chocolate. Melted the chocolate, cut the strawberries into roughly heart shaped halves, and dipped them.
It's a fun activity you can either do ahead of time and give them to your significant other, or you can have fun doing it together. Cheaper than most store bought chocolate, and a lot more thoughtful imo.
Also, it's my birthday, so I enjoy opening presents and such. Usually way too much chocolate.

Oh man, this is the greatest thing ever. Thank you for posting this.
I just sent like 10 of these to different people I know.
Every year I tell myself that I'll go out and treat myself to a fancy dinner alone, but I can never force myself to go through with it. Not since I saw that one episode of Frasier.
Gave my girlfriend trowel earrings (she's an archaeologist). She gave me silver sixpence cufflinks (I wear shirts).
Her card should turn up later today. I decided to post it even though we live together. I'm not sure why.
Tonight she's cooking me something.
We went to a beer festival this weekend, so that was our romantic evening out - she had two pork pies and I had a foot of black pudding, plus several pints of various beers and ciders.
I am teaching 4.5 hours of classes, including a lab and a midterm. That takes me to 5:30pm. Then at 6pm I have a project meeting for a grant application we need to finish.
Personally I find the whole day to be silly. But I still got my girlfriend an awesome locket because A) She had expressed liking lockets before and Doing it for V-Day makes sense.
I was going to get one for her eventually anyway, but doing it today works better than some other random day. Points for me.

Not only was there an image, there were about a hundred poems.
She sat in my lap. We stared at each other intently. She slowly leaned closer. I whispered, "I love you."
She looked at me with her 12 eyes, began to smile and responded,
