If you've ever played Dwarf Fortress, it might remind you of that. Because just like DF you die...and die...and die. And then die again. And when (if?) you finally win it's awesome. But I haven't won yet...that's just what I've heard.

There was a thread about Roguelikes around here somewhere.
Or at least, I remember there was.
What that has to do with this, I dunno.
I just saw it mentioned a ton in that thread.
I think I have it somewhere, though I've only played it sparingly.

I downloaded this the other day then promptly got distracted by a loud noise and forgot I had it.
Imagine Minecraft having an extensive Roguelike mod. Now imagine sleep being unnecessary for human survival.

I just dream that Toadyone and Notch will get together and create the perfect game, then humanity will come to an end due to lack of productivity. It'll be like the movie surogates, but backwards. Everyone lives in the digital world.

Ridiculous fun. Just spent about 2 hours playing. Unlocked the rogue, who is bad ass if not a little light on the HP. Trying to beat it as the wizard, but I just can't seem to get the job done, I'm always out of mana...and then HP.

I don't know how much DD has changed since I last played but I found wizard to be the easiest class to win with. With the fireball they have the best setup of the base classes to defeat over-level monsters which is the ket to DD. You are being an elf right?
Been loving this since I saw Totalbiscuits review. Unlocked the Assassin so far but can't seem to get the first unlock on the other classes. Always using Halfling right now as converting glyphs to health pots is very handy indeed.
Yowchie. I beat it with the Thief straightaway, then had my ass roundly kicked as a Wizard several times before blasting through a level with a dwarf priest of Earthmother.
Some of these bosses are just MADE for certain gods/classes, though. Taking on the goblin without the one that removes enemy resistances? Brr.

Wow, I was totally considering creating a thread for this last week.
I was sick so I had nothing to do other than beat all 4 challenge dungeons with all 18 classes
My advice, take Elf as your race unless you have a really good reason not to (i.e. you're a Thief, Priest, Berserker, Warlord, or Monk)

It depends on the class you're playing. The wider internet consensus is that most of the time gnome or halfling are the most advantageous to play. There are occasions when this is not the case -
If you're deft at settings things up for the level-up catapult multiple times then elf is probably more gooder. Assassin works pretty well with the Orc.
But for battles of attrition potions outperform stats the vast majority of the time.
I have thus far only unlocked the 6 races, the 12 normal classes and the transmuter. I have beaten the Crypt, Library and Snake Pit with at least one class each.
I am hating the crypt though, god damn it Assassin, why do you have to suck so much in the Crypt?

I now have finished the crypt with the assassin.
I'm yet to determine which is my favourite class. But I do know that I don't like the berserker.
Elf sorceror is loads of fun though as is halfling priest. It's a little hard getting one's head around the correct way to play the warlord, but it is pretty great when it clicks.
It's a little hard getting one's head around the correct way to play the warlord, but it is pretty great when it clicks.
Warlord seems like the easiest class in my opinion. You can easily take on monsters that are twice your level. Make sure you have full mana, that you have the life saving glyph activated, and that you can kill the monster in three hits. Plus, you get a damage bonus at low health (which will be more than normal thanks to the glyph) and for drinking mana potions. The Warlord and Assassin are really good classes for figuring out how to work level up catapults and exp steamrolls.
Also, for new players: use the mouse, not arrow keys. When clicking on a monster it'll tell you whether you'll live, die, or win, and arrow keys are (in my experience) way too easy to accidentally run into a monster.
I hope to do this someday soon. As is, I seem to always run out of resources on the zombie boss after killing the wraith boss.
I did dwarf assassin and found CYDSTEPP early on. I immediately converted any glyphs I found except for that and BURNDARAYZ. I also found the Pactmaker's altar relatively early on and bought the item which allows you to ignore manaburn (soul sphere, maybe?). First thing I did was Learning, then I increased my mana and saved the experience for a slingshot if I needed it.
The slight health boost early on made a difference and my main tactic was cydstepp regen find high level critter fireballx2, attack x 3 (first striking makes Cydstepp the total business - more than usual), that is, until I got enough mana to cast Cydstepp twice - then I had to calculate which was the better move 3 fireballs or an extra attack, until about level 8 I think the former was the better option.
I started taking down The Tormented One first and managed a levelup slingshot to cinch that deal. I think I started around level 6 on the The Tormented One.
Then I had enough in me, and the pact maker's piety and critters around to level slingshot maybe once or twice and still had all my potions for taking down Frank.
So, there was a lot of luck WRT good draws - Pactmaker nice and close and the two artifacts I bought were powerful factors in my success.
I won this the first two times I played (human fighter). Lost all games since. Mostly as elf wizard.

That's because you should be playing Gnome Wizard!
Just dominated the Snake Pit with the Thief and then scraped through with the monk.
Thief is seriously OP. Doubling the number of potions you have, multiplying the number of things on the ground. And then on top of that the First strike bonus. Sets up chains of Level up catapults and you can basically outlast anything with your potions.

Yeah, the Thief is amazingly good. Human Monk is incredibly powerful too, especially if you can find some armor in one of the shops.

The more I played the more helpful I found Elf. Squeezing in an extra Fireball frequently lets me take out monster 2-3 levels higher than me for massive exp bonuses

I'd say that, out of all 72 challenge combinations, beating the Crypt with the Assassin was the hardest. If I remember correctly, I went Elf Assassin, found mana burn immunity in a shop, and murdered Wraiths many levels higher than me. This let me use the instant kill on lower level enemies to wear down the bosses (melee the zombie and fireball the wraith).
Having played all the races, I'd say my favorites are:
This is amazing and is probably going to make me fail the term. Working on the Assassin/Crypt right now.
Good luck. Don't forget that gold carries over between rounds.
If you're having trouble, you can always run the Factory to improve item quality from stores. It's actually really easy once you figure out how to kill a level 9 monster at level 1.
I've beaten it with the first level warrior with the guy who gets better attack from smashing glyphs.
I suck with everything else.
Are you attacking monsters that are a higher level than you? You get massive exp bonuses that make up for not having the +1 exp per kill from the Fighter.

You must be pro. I can't kill level 2 monsters at level 1 most times.
I tried an elf/wizard run last night and didn't find fireball on the map -anywhere-. How do you play wizard without fireball??

1) One of the monsters in the Factory is really easy to cheese with Fireball
2) Unless you're a Human Wizard or find Poison, you don't
Edit: While I recommend Elf Wizard, Human Wizard is surprisingly good. Due to the way human bonuses work (+10% damage) it neutralizes the Wizard penalty.
Elf Wizard = 75% starting + 30% from runes = 105% damage
Human Wizard = 75% starting + 30% from runes + 40% from 4 glyphs = 145% damage
Most Other classes = 100% starting + 30% from runes = 130% damage
Now beating every mode with every class? That'll take some time.
Yes, yes it will. Have you beaten Normal with the tier 3 classes so that you unlock their glyphs?
Yeah, you have to have beaten all of the tier 3 classes to unlock everything since otherwise you don't have access to the Factory.
Trying to unlock the Factory classes was giving me no end of trouble the other day, but today, I tried it again and I got Poison, Heal, and shop selling +20% Physical Resist armor. Much easier - used heal, poison, and potions to kill the Meat Man boss when I was at LV7 or so and then took out the other boss at LV9.

He's trivial if you can get Poison either from a glyph or a shop.
Life steal from Dracul works well too, since his damage is fairly low.
Otherwise you'll need to setup enough lower level monsters that you can level up part way through the fight to get a second wind of health.
