I've had dogs before, but never my own that I'll raise as a puppy onwards.
No dog yet, and I'll go to the dog training classes, but can anyone recommend a decent dog training book? I'd like to get started learning everything I can.
Ian Dunbar has a book expressly for that purpose. It is called "Before you get your puppy" and is available on amazon for less than $10 but you can also download it for free from his website.
Once you have your dog, my favorite training book is Sue Ailsby's training levels because she breaks everything down really well and has a lot of hints for troubleshooting things that aren't going as you expect. You also might find her blog about training her current service dog entertaining and informative reading before you get your puppy as she goes into the good and the bad parts of raising a puppy and talks about what she did well, what didn't go well and what she will change for her next puppy.
Patricia McConnell also has a "puppy primer" that is available for less than $10 that is a little bit more in detail than the Ian Dunbar book but is less training focused than the training levels.
