It made it worthwhile in the sense that, if you hadn't already amassed thousands of rupees by the time you have to decipher the maps, you had to spend hours grinding them just so you could continue the game.
I had enough rupees to do it all the first time through without any grinding at all. But every subsequent time I played the game, I found myself without enough, so I had to grind. In either case, it's kind of pointless.
I think what all of this is meant to show is that Tingle is a treacherous and greedy bastard who will take advantage of you when he is in a position to do so. He knows that these charts lead you to the pieces of the Triforce that you need and that he is the sole person who can decipher them for you. This is all a get rich quick scam by him so that he can buy more slaves and have enough rupees to go on the handheld homoerotic adventures that we would later see. Of course I also have my suspicions that he is a pedophile.
That is completely and totally irrelevant to every other thing that ever happens in the whole game, though. He wasn't established enough as a character for me to care about him being a treacherous bastard. As it is, Tingle is just a game mechanic to me. Like a shop owner, or whatever. An annoying-ass shop owner who sells you plot devices.
The actual seriousness of that post should have at least been tipped off by my assertion that Tingle is a pedophile. :P
Honestly, they probably just realized that the game gave you very few other things to do with rupees and made the deciphering cost so much just to at least have another outlet for spending them. Twilight Princess also did this with setting up the other Malo Mart in Hyrule Town and of course the Magic Armor.

On another note entirely, is anyone else as happy as I am that Link is once again able to fire beams from his sword in Skyward Sword? To me, that was a defining trait of Link in the early going; Mario jumped, Link shot enemies with his sword.
Some said that it would never work, and... well, I guess it remains to be seen. Though if I'm not mistaken, others pointed out that the Fierce Deity in Majora's Mask could do that little trick as well.
That aside, I hated seeing it nerfed out of existence as time went on. The range and strength in Zelda II was pathetic, sometimes not even phasing an enemy at all, and then only the Master Sword could fire beams in A Link to the Past. But there, while it would affect a pretty good number of different enemy types, it would often take a lot of hits to kill off foes.
Anyway, glad it's back. I just hope it's worth using again.

Thankfully, I discovered the manga version when a friend gave it to me for Christmas (mistaking it for the NP comic, amusingly enough). And wow, it's far, far better.

Okay, looks like I was wrong on this. The Sword Beams have been in more games than I realized. All the more reason for me to get the Oracles and Minish Cap, I suppose...
...though Minish Cap's version is interesting. Called the "Peril Beam," it is only usable when you have only one heart left.
Still, it's cool to see it make a return (of sorts, given MM) to the 3D games. Incidentally, it looks like it was originally going to be in Ocarina, but was removed for some reason. It can still be accessed through debug trickery.

Played a pretty epic marathon of Twilight Princess last night and
beat the Zora Temple (had to warp out twice with the assistance of the weird alien chicken due to accumulating too many rupees), revived Midna after the Zant assault, got the Master Sword, collected at least enough heart pieces to form another heart container, killed 11 poes, paid the full 1,000 rupees to have the bridge to Hyrule Town repaired, and fucked around a lot.
So yeah, whoo! Now I'm at the point in the game where the world really opens up and there is a ton of stuff to do, which is always a great moment in any Zelda game. This is my third time playing through Twilight Princess and I have to say that I'm still thoroughly enjoying it and am excited to return to it every time I boot up my Wii. If anything, my appreciation for the games incredible pacing, overall design, and the sheer amount of secrets has only strengthened. I really hope that Skyward Sword manages to have you do as much stuff in between dungeons and that it also manages to be as varied. And personally, I have always really liked the collection aspect of Zelda whether it be heart pieces, golden bugs, poe souls, skulltulas, masks, or pictures of characters and enemies in the game; so someone in Skyward Sword better be cursed or demand that you go forth and collect some weird artifacts! I'm sure that there will be though, in much the same way three ancient doodads will need to be obtained before you get a certain weapon of legend. Also, if they decide to introduce a really badass and foreboding villian again, they should not proceed to make him into a wacky fucking clown of sorts at a later point in the game.
Of those, I think the aspects best left out of future games are temporary invincibility (which is just rather unnecessary given the difficulty of more recent titles), spellcasting (I actually like Link with just the magic meter, or preferably no magic meter if they can get that to work again like in Twilight Princess), jumping at will (there really isn't a point to jumping at any point in time, it was only in one game, and I think in a 3D game it would take away from the sort of tank-like feel to Link), and experience points (too much RPG for a Zelda game honestly and it was mostly tied to spellcasting anyway). I have mixed feeling about exploration and non-linearity the way they define it. They do have a good point in that complete freedom to go anywhere right from the start makes it harder to tell a good cohesive story.
The frivolous items and brutality would be more then welcome back though. I disagree with the article too when it states: "Bringing back that same level of challenge in the main quest of a modern Zelda wouldn't be the best idea today, as the franchise is too popular and too well-loved to alienate anyone who'd be unable to keep up with any sudden increase in difficulty." The vast majority of people seem to be calling for more challenge from what I've seen and like the article states, they can always do that with the Second Quest route. Ocarina of Time seemed to be the last Zelda with frivolous items that you could collect just for fun and maybe a few instances in the overworld. The ice arrows from the Gerudo Challenge Grounds had absolutely no point but they were kind of cool.
Given that NSMBwii and DKCR have that super guide thing, and maybe SMG2 too?, I think there's a good chance the next Zelda will have a decent difficulty. I mean wasn't the super guide patent submitted with Zelda like diagrams?
And also, a lot of people appreciate that clown like aspect that makes Zelda bad guys unique.

It's biggest success is characterization, the secondary characters have more weight to them then most previous Zeldas and some excellent boss fights, too.
It's one of my favorites. I appreciate a well-crafted version of a great standard, and that's what Twilight Princess was.

All the Zelda elements are there, neatly divided, labeled and hooked up, but without the exploration and discovery process which gave Zelda its unique flavour. There wasn't even the possibility of "sneaky" player behaviour, and no good reward for going off the rails. No ice rod moment, if you will. No Biggoron Sword Quest. Hell, they made the trading sequence part of the plot! Had the everything regarding helping Illya been completely optional, I think Twilight Princess would have felt a lot more open.
Also, they had those godawful wolf howling songs. Ugh.

Also, they had those godawful wolf howling songs. Ugh.
I suppose, but I literally noticed none of those as issues, let alone negatives. People find different meanings in what Zelda is supposed to be.

Yeah, yeah. I love Twilight Princess for what it is, but it takes a while to figure out what it is, because the game doesn't even know. The game design wants to be Ocarina of Time 2, and it fails at that for the most part, but in places where it's not trying to be OoT, it succeeds pretty brilliantly.
And the wolf howling thing is a good example of why I think the gameplay feels super disjointed. There are too many different game mechanics at play, and for the most part you aren't taught in an intuitive way, which has been a trademark of Nintendo games since the beginning. Every time you have to do something new, it's frustrating and fiddly. Especially on the Wii, where the controls are unnecessarily complicated in the first place.
It's really the first Zelda game where it doesn't feel like it's setting the standard for control and controls.
I wish to add my LoZ story here. I wasn't even born when this game came out. When I was 2, my dad left this game on and I found dungeon 6 that he had been spending a week looking for. It wasn't until I was 4 that I beat this game for the first time. I couldn't even read but I knew most of the places and all the patterns of the bosses. It would be 10 years before I would even touch another Zelda game, 15 years before I'd play the original again, but I still remember beating it as one of my crowning moment for years and one reason I've been playing games as long as I have.

If I remember correctly, there are actually two versions of the sword beam. The full health version is there as well, but is learned seperately.
