Gonna have to give 1 another try one of these days before 2 comes out. It's one of those titles that, for whatever reason, I could never get past the initial 2 hours on. I've tried a few times, but there's something about the combat in 1 that didn't click with me. It's been a while, though. Might be time to tack it onto the to-game list as 2 looks promising.
I've said it before, but, combat really picks up after you get some levels and unlock various different abilities for stances and stuff.
I readily admit that combat never becomes zomg amazing, or something that draws you back into the game, but it definitely gets better as things go on and you learn abilities, get timings down pat, stance dance in bigger fights etc. It does make the early game lean toward the boring side if the other stuff like alchemy, story, setting, etc, don't draw you in very fast.
Anway, I'm really interested to see how combat works in 2. All I've heard is that it is nothing like one and its great.
Would the world burn if i cheated my way through this game? I don't think I have the patience to click-click-click on enemies all over again after reaching chapter 4 last time. But the world they created was pretty great and if anything, I want a save for the sequel.
Just dump all your points into ignii, and make a bunch of the potions that increase your maximum staminda and stamina regeneration rate
Dragon Age 2. DRAGON AGE 2. You're doing Dead Space 2 a disservice.
hahaha
it's just a bit of genre hunger i guess. i've been on a sci-fi tear with DS2 (roughly 150 hours spent playing it by now) and i've got the fantasy itch.

This shows a pretty good chunk of gameplay, The Dude With Herpes.
Now, if they would turn down the pony tail left-right bob by about 3 notches, that would be just swell for me.
Very excited about this game. Loved the books. Can't wait to aard some fools in the face.

I hope the engine is seriously well optimized. I have a pretty good PC but my CPU is showing its age. I don't want this game to run like a bitch.
Then again, its hard to tell these days. I can load up a game like ArcaniA which looks very nice, or any UE3 game and run with everything maxed with it running silky smooth. But then I load up the DA2 demo and it runs like a fucking slideshow.
EDIT: I mean, come on. I can max out Metro2033 in DX10 at 1920x1080 but I can't fucking run DA2? Yeah. No.

JC2 is ridiculously well optimized though. My old athlon X2 5600+ @ 2.6ghz was able to run it on high.
That said, I'm so tempted to try out the DA2 demo just for shits and giggles.

JC2 is well optimized, but honestly, with the engines that are available out there like UE3 or Cryengine 3; you better be damn sure your dev team is good enough to produce something comparable.
It should be the standard at this point, not the exception. I never have any fear of buying any UE3 based game because I know I'm going to be able to jack everything up to the max and still have it run smooth and get all the pretties. I can see a video of a game that looks amazing but if I know its on a good engine I don't hesitate to buy it if I so desire.
But when the game is on an in-studio engine, I will typically wait for a demo or the price to come down because I've been burned in the past buying games that, visually, should be cake on my PC (or PC's in the past), yet run like complete ass.
Doubly bad when, like apparently DA2, the game itself might run fine, but the demos performance is so bad that even if I was moderately interested in it, I'll pass (or buy it on the 360, not DA2 though...) entirely.
They would have been better off not even putting out a demo at that point.
EDIT: And I know I'm taking a risk with the Witcher 2 because it's an in-house engine, but I have faith in these guys to do it right. I really hope I'm not let down.
back when witcher 2 videos were first leaked, i KNEW at that point that i'd be buying a new graphics card just for that game. my card at the time is now min-spec.
on the other hand, the dead space games run on an in-house EA engine, and they're optimized to hell and back. i know a guy who has trouble running source games and he's maxing DS1 and 2.

On the one hand, even Witcher 1 looked better than Dragon Age, if we're talking things like quality of textures and environmental details and so forth. So in theory this should be a lot more intensive still
On the other, the fact that they were using the ageing Aurora engine in ways it was never originally built for was likely vastly inefficient in itself. Heck, look at the massive boost in performance over time that the first game received just from patching.
So whilst I'm expecting system requirements are going to be higher, I'm not entirely sure they're going to be as high as we might be worrying.

I just tried the demo and reached the Balrog thing at what I'm assuming is supposed to be the end? I dunno, I died. That was the only issue I had with it, ran at a smooth 40+ fps which is is fantastic considering I've got a low-profile card. Everything was set to high btw.
I just wish I could play the game without getting bored and annoyed at the controls.

Yeah, I just hope they've got their engine running well under the hood.
Running games like JC2, Metro 2033, ArcaniA(Demo anyway) and other very pretty games very smoothly on my PC at high or highest settings gives me hope that I can play this game in all its glory
The DA2 demo, and an unaltered DA2 retail/downloaded copy doesn't actually come with the high-resolution textures. The most you can get on the demo or full game without downloading the high-res texture pack that's available online is medium. If you put it any higher it doesn't actually effect the graphics, but I think it does slow the game down. Also I think the demo had problems with vsync, so if you enabled that you would have performance problems. The way the game loaded stuff was also changed for the better.
That said, TW2 is still better looking. I think the character models look especially good.
restarted my witcher 1 playthrough, and just got to the outskirts of vizima. putting a lot of points into intelligence and dexterity early on, and i plan to use alchemy more than i had previously.

yeah you need plenty of White Honey, eliminates all toxicity and potion effects. Toxicity lingers longer than potion effects so you can't simply retake the same combination right when a buff expires.
for me potions made combat fun on the hardest setting as there was more going on than only timing the clicks, more preparation.
Hey, best of both worlds as far as I'm concerned. Completely DRM free, but still tied to a service account that will allow you to re-download whenever you want. And you can just add it as a non-Steam game to your Steam games list.

Yeah. I'm all over the GoG version.
No DRM? Best fucking non-game feature out of every edition. You can have all the soundtracks, art books, and statues. I'll take being treated like a paying customer any time.

Well there's no way to shove a statue down the pipeline, but I'm pretty sure you get everything else in digital format.
Also, apparently there's going to be a Live QA session on the 18th of March
But wait, there's even more cool stuff about The Witcher 2 on GOG. For all users who preorder the game on GOG, we'll host a live video Q&A on Ustream with Senior Producer of The Witcher 2, Tomasz Gop. The Q&A will take place on Friday, March 18th, at 19:00 GMT and during the Q&A, Tomasz will be revealing some exclusive “Making of the new Geralt” concept art and discussing the changes in the fighting mechanic from the original game.
How do you get access to the Q&A? That's easy, everyone who preorders The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings on GOG.com by noon GMT on Thursday the 17th will receive a link and a password that will allow them to take part in the session and ask questions about The Witcher 2 and GOG.com. Everyone whose questions get answered will receive one coupon for a free GOG game.
okay, group style is fucking awesome.

Everyone raves about signs, but an upgraded group style is the most satisfying thing. Combat just feels satisfying, when you get into the rhythm of clicks. Also, if this is your first time through, I reccomend talking to the Druids in the swamp (you'll know them when you meet 'em) and getting a potion recipe for avoiding stun and knockdowns. It is the most useful potion, especially against a certain boss. Getting knocked down all the time was easily one of the most frustrating parts of combat, as it completely messed up my flow, and any combos I had going.
