Essential Eastwood?

I think the only Clint Eastwood movies I've seen, is part of one where he's an army drill sergeant, one of the Dirty Harry movies, and that newish one, where he helps the kid get away from gangs.

I feel like I need to see more Clint Eastwood films, and look to H/A on advice on which are the best, and which if any should be passed over. I'm interested in them all pretty much, from early stuff to later stuff, makes no difference.

Whether they find a life there or not, I think Jupiter should be called an enemy planet.

Like Midshipman said, see the Man With No Name trilogy first. [strike]Well, actually, Unforgiven may be a little more digestible to start with.[/strike] Actually, Thomemelas is right, Unforgiven is too much an homage/deconstruction of the earlier Eastwood Westerns and the whole genre to not save it for last.

I'm personally fond of Pale Rider, although it's not on the same level. High Plains Drifter is solid but it's not my favorite. Hang 'Em High is a little meh IMO. I have yet to see Joe Kidd, Josey Wales, or Two Mules For Sister Sarah.

Getting away from Westerns, Where Eagles Dare is a quite enjoyable World War II action-adventure with Clint and Richard Burton.

Heartbreak Ridge is the first one.

Lets, see the Eastwood stuff that should be watched as a small sample:

    The Dollar's Trilogy
    Two Mules for Sister Sarah
    The Outlaw Josey Wales
Unforgiven (Which should be watched after the other westerns)
    Dirty Harry 1/2
    In the Line of Fire
    Kelly's Heroes.

It's a small sample and it doesn't have a lot of his modern works and I didn't include a lot of the stuff he's directed.

If you wanna see the "western" Eastwood, for the love of everything you hold to be holy, see Unforgiven as the LAST western.

    I cannot stress this enough.

You should definitely see Kelly's Heroes, although I never really think of it as a "Clint Eastwood movie." I think of it as a Donald Sutherland movie in which Clint Eastwood happens to star as the titular character.

    Also, the music!

While the westerns were great, i really like a lot of his later-career stuff, like In the Line of Fire, True Crime, Heartbreak Ridge, and Unforgiven. As a director, he's made some really, really good movies that are really depressing, like Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, and Bird. He's also made your uplifting or fun movies, like Invictus, Firefox, and even Space Cowboys.

You don't really think about how incredibly diverse his career has been, because you focus on his tough-guy actor persona, but it has been a hell of a career.

Cool, looks like I've got a lot of movie watching to do, which is fine, because it won't stop snowing here.

I didn't really think about watching movies he's directed, but I've seen both Mystic River and Invictus, and enjoyed them both, so I'll have to check out the others.

Hooray for Netflix, everything was available for either DVD queue or instant queue, except for one, which was Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.

I think these are in order of release?

    The Beguiled

    Play Misty for me

    High Plains Drifter

    The Eiger Sanction

    The Outlaw Josey Wales

    The Gauntlet

    Tightrope

All of these movies are good, some are great.

Most of the movies Clint has been a part of have at least some redeeming qualities, he's made very few real stinkers.

This list is just some of my favourites outside of the usual suspects like the Dollars Trilogy and Dirty Harry quadrilogy.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot was good, Gran Torino was good. Really, you could just aim your browser at his wikipedia filmography, and start at the beginning.

He has so many fantastic movies. I highly reccomend starting with Hang Em High and working your way forward chronologically from there. My buddy and I spent a week watching ALL of his westerns one time, and it was great. Unforgiven is probably one of my all time favorites, but mainly due to all of his westerns that came before it.

    Great actor, great movies!!
