A few articles of interest this Monday morning that I've noticed.

First off Viacom is stupid:
It looks like YouTube is going to have a chunk of space to fill on its servers in the wake of complaints from Viacom Inc. about copyright infringement.

The company, which owns MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon and the Paramount Pictures movie studio, asked YouTube on Friday to remove more than 100,000 unauthorized clips from its popular video-sharing internet site.

Viacom has been in talks for several months with YouTube and its corporate parent Google Inc., which bought the download site in October 2006 for $1.65 billion US.

Viacom's MTV Networks division reached a licensing deal last year with Google that allows the search company's video service to use clips from MTV and its sibling networks under a revenue-sharing agreement.

But in a statement Friday, Viacom said: "It has become clear that YouTube is unwilling to come to a fair market agreement that would make Viacom content available to YouTube users."

Viacom said YouTube and Google failed to deliver on several "filtering tools" to control unauthorized video from appearing on the site. The company has asked YouTube to take the clips down, but stopped short of filing a lawsuit against the site.

YouTube said in a statement that it would comply with the request from Viacom, and it co-operates "with all copyright holders to identify and promptly remove infringing content as soon as we are officially notified."

Ok, yeah lets piss of free publicity. That makes a lot of sense...

Next up: Nananananananana - the bionic arm where it won't feel like a stranger when your choking your chicken.
A new technique allows patients with a prosthetic arm to feel its movements as if it were a real limb, researchers say.

Currently, most prosthetics are not linked to muscles or connected to the nerves in the amputated area. Only a single motion can be controlled at a time, so movements of a prosthetic elbow, wrist and hand or hook have to be done in slow, awkward steps.

Todd Kuiken of the Neural Engineering Center for Artificial Limbs at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and his colleagues developed a new method of nerve regrowth that they say improves control of a motorized prosthetic arm.

In Saturday's issue of the journal The Lancet, the team reports that a 26-year-old woman who lost her arm in a motorcycle accident is able to control her new prosthetic arm better than her conventional prosthesis. The technique has been tried on three others, twice successfully.
Faster, more efficient motion

The technique, called targeted muscle reinnervation, re-routes the end of the motor nerves that once controlled her real arm into the muscles of her chest and side.

Chest muscles are linked to sensors in the artificial limb, allowing the woman, Claudia Mitchell, to close her hand by thinking about it. Electrical signals are sent through surgically rerouted nerves to make the motion happen.

"The function of her prosthesis improved substantially, as shown by an increase in speed and efficiency of motion," the team wrote.

"In this study we showed that targeted sensory reinnervation can be purposefully implemented to provide … sensation of touch in the missing limb."

That's pretty neat. I wonder how long it is before amputees start out performing us? It's already happened in running.

I really would like a bionic arm, but not one of those weak, creepy, mannequin-looking arms. I want pneumatic, exposed piston, super-villian arms. Like with 3-finger claw attachments and a grappling hook and a USB port so I can post here with my MIND.

They'd probably toss in a digital camera too for good measure, and unlimited text messaging at a low, low monthly rate.

what with modern technology being crap

you would probably be better off getting something mechanical to slip over your entire existing arm

basically big, muscular looking pieces of metal that fit over your arm that make it look like a crazy prosthetic
and then there are controls hidden around your hand to do crazy things

Then I would have to get new shirts. Think man.
I guess I'd just tear the arms off my existing shirts and let the cold, unfeeling steel exoskeleton keep me warm, but it'd be bulky.

It's not your broadband, it's how you use it.

How much more convoluted can this analogy get? Shall we test it?
