The new Cloning feature is much appreciated. It's made a subtle but tangible difference. I've already become more likely to trade Goons for stuff, for example.
Awesome, when I saw it on steam I was like aww shoot, since I like having my games collected and I already bought it on the Impulse beta offer, tried the key from Impulse to see if it worked and fuck yeah, it did.
Anyways, yeah just FYI the Impulse key works on steam if anyone is wondering.
this looks like Star Control. Don't tell me this is like star control. Is it open world? Is there an end? I dont think I could play this game if there is not an end. I could play this game forever if it is star control, open world and has no ending, and that is a problem.
The "goal" of the game is to reach the galactic core. I wouldn't say it's open world, but you're allowed to pick whatever faction you want to befriend in any given gravity well, and there's several-to-a-dozen mission types I've seen so far.
I've never even made it close to the core, but I've only been playing for a few hours.
Is there really a point to befriending UTA? Since you always have to go through one of their blockades, which involves killing them or bribing them. And we all know the correct answer that question.

Sometimes they have stuff you want to buy. Then you make friends. After you buy their stuff, then it's open season of course.
edit: Also I don't know if it was just the way my game in the Beta rolled or what but the pacing feels a ton better in my new 1.0 game.
Just spent all morning on this and wow, i'm impressed. There's alot more depth than i thought there'd be and i like the guided story when needed and masses of sandbox play to get to the next story element. Pretty cool and definitely worth getting- the Indie quality and not being able to put it down reminds me of Terraria

I believe making it to the Core is part 1. The rest of the game opens up after that.
It rtechnically is open world in that you can pretty much go anywhere as long as you can open the jump gates to the various systems.

This is only true to a point.
And that point is when you get a Huge ship and can just blow the fuck up any UTA station to get the juicy blueprints inside.
One thing I'll say that is odd is that you get a trade rate of 10 data per goon at some of the science stations near the core (it's hard to say where), meaning that you spend about 150 goons to level up... at which point you get 75 back. That's my main source of levelups it seems, near the endgame.
Man this game gets ridiculously hard around level 21. They keep throwing me up against 2-3 mediums and a large ship at a time. My light escorts are useless.
Is there a trick to this aside from throwing mans at them until space is clogged with debris? I have purchased everything available so far, although I haven't hit a few sectors that didn't have anything for sale yet to see if anything connecting does. I have the level 2 cannon, armor, shield, engine, and reactor, with a cannon booster. Using the dual turret ship since it can blast through lights in two volleys and do some pretty good damage to a medium before I'm out of energy and explode.
I took a side mission in a level 8 system and it had me going up a big space station. With my one medium and two small ships. That was a lot of wasted Rez, assuming that since it was a low level system the mission must be doable.
FUCKING HELL I just spent more than 3 hours playing SPAZ and now it's almost 4 AM.

Cannons blow, use missles and beams. Drop some armor if it makes you move faster; manuverability is pretty great.

Unless they really changed something, I was a big fan of the rapid fire cannons... the ones that shot like a chain-gun. They tore unshielded stuff to bits.
The problem being I am not getting the weapon unlocks to use different guns. I have one blueprint for some higher level missile, and one for SRM's. But haven't seen any others.
I am only using the cannons because I actually got an upgrade for them, I was using launchers but the micro missles don't do enough damage, and the surplus torpedos are hard to hit with, without them being shot down.
Yes, I already said I bought everything currently available. I must need to hit up some of the other systems that didn't have anything for sale, to get to new areas. The problem is everything left is like level 18+ gates, so its a pain to get through, basically have to just throw mans at them until I get through.
I'd just level up then and keep exploring for new plans. Try focusing on upping your weapons versus armor rather then bum rushing the gates. It seems to be the way to go for me.
I'm comfortable at about level 20 gates, but there's a 26 and a 30 between me and the next plot mission. I guess they made the default galaxy so big so you'd get a sense of exploration and scale, but really what you get are upgrades spread really far apart. I haven't even seen a Large ship yet, let alone equip and fly one.
I don't get what goons are. Also...when I build a ship, there is a slider that is some kind of percentage of crew. Confused.
Fun game overall so far though.
Goons are crew. The more you have, the faster they repair damage during combat.
I haven't figured out that damn slider yet either.

The slider tells it what percentage of crew capacity to keep onboard after the ship jumps. So if you have a ship with a crew capacity of 10 and you send it to repair or refit, any crew in excess of 2 will be moved to the surplus on the mothership.

Also, later in the game when the Zombie part kicks in your ships can get boarded, infested and taken over. Crew will fight the Zombie infestation. I even have a specialist that boosts crew combat effectiveness.
edit: The crew slider also determines how much extra crew the ship gets when it's constructed. If you are going "recruiting" you may want to drop the slider down, so you have more space on your ship for "recruits." Of course, this will affect how fast your ship gets repaired and later on how well your crew fights off boarders. Now that I think about it, I'll bet human enemies can board you too, with the Suicide Cannon.

I have that specialist too but have not reached the point where you can get boarded. Was wondering what that was for!

Are they still doing that? I had the impression that was something they did for the people who ordered the Beta, as a show of appreciation. I'm not sure about it one way or the other, but I'd make sure that was the case if that's what you plan on doing.

Also got my first Specialist, which is new in 1.0. You get 3 slots with people who can level up and give even more bonuses.

Science stations and mining stations (both CIV faction) will sell equipment, as well.
Ferinstance, there were four places I could buy missiles in my current game - two UTA, two Civ, in 4 different sectors.

I restarted to get the side missions. I guess they're more interesting now.
I'm tempted to try the All Mines build someone mentioned since they seem to be much more powerful in 1.0.

And from Minmax themselves, which is the best way as then the two guys get the most payola.

Yeah, they still do it.
if the keys are activatable on steam they're paying valve a cut for every one they sell anyway so it shouldn't matter where you buy it from
Only if you actually bother to activate it on Steam tho. I don't think they lose any money if you don't.
OMG CURSED
