Bypass monitor speakers with PS3 and HDMI connection.

I ended up getting a decently sized monitor to replace my tiny TV for gaming. Only problem is that the monitor has built in speakers that are awful. There is some sort of audio port on the back of the monitor and i've tried connecting my speakers to it but the audio still comes out of the monitor.

The input jack in the back of the monitor fits what I think is a 3.5? I'm not quite sure of what the name is but it's the same connection that would fit headphones or a PCs audio port.

Is there anyway at all I can use that port to get sound from my speakers somehow? Or is the HDMI input preventing that?

tl;dr I have a speaker set up that can use a 3.5 audio jack and a 3.5 input in the back of my monitor. But the PS3 when connected via HDMI is still sending sound to the monitors speakers. Anyway around it?

Have you checked in the on-screen menus of the monitor? Usually there's an option to use external speakers.

So far I haven't found anything. The instruction manual was kind of sparse so i've been doing lots of button pushing.

The 3.5mm port is probably for input only. Can you use the optical output on your PS3 or maybe the standard cable with an RCA -> 3.5mm adapter? Last time i messed with a PS3 there were assloads of audio output options, but I'm not sure if that was one of them.

I guess I should say that the monitor doesn't have an RCA input :(

I think he was suggesting you use the HDMI for the video, but then hook up an RCA for the audio and plug it into whatever non-monitor solution you have for audio.

it's this guy by the way.

ahh that's a good idea. I'll have to grab another set of speakers then with an RCA and give it a shot.

the way i have it set up. is on the PS3 in options (sound and video) you can turn sound threw hdmi off and i have sound comming out of the optical and that goes into my 5.1 system

if you dont have an optical in system

you may be able to use the normal AV leads

so hdmi sound off to the moniter and the AV leads sending sound (thats the red and white connectors) if you speekers dont have that kind of imput you can buy a little connector that is red and white phono in to 3.5 jack out.

in my experence is best NOT to have the sound going to the tv or the moniter then out of a head phone jack and to the speekers. direct to audio system is best

    Perfect solution!

Thank you very much. I have one of the little adapters at home so i'll be able to use that to avoid the terrible tin can sound. Thank you everyone for the input and solutions this was a real bummer for a while.
