I am trying to figure out the best way to organize my games library on my PC and I wanted to see how other people around here who have large libraries handle it. Right now I have 5 columns of icons going down the right side of my desktop and it's kind of ugly.
Do you just keep them in steam and forgo desktop icons altogether? Do you have a bunch of icons on the desktop? Do you use the Windows Games Library (I've had trouble doing that with Steam because everything shows up with a Steam icon and it gets confusing?)
Any ideas would be great. My desktop is looking really ugly.
Also, I didn't know if this would be better for Games and Technology or Help and Advice.
No desktop icons. If the game isn't in Steam, I just hit the Windows key and type the first three letters of the game I want to play. Then I hit enter. Hooray for Search.
I was doing that for a while for anything that wasn't a game. That worked out great when I only had a few games installed. A couple of Steam Holiday sales later and now I may start doing it for games too.
You could always create a folder on the desktop, and drop all the icons into that. Then switch the default "new folder" icon for something not so bland.
You can add non-Steam games on Steam which pretty much just creates a shortcut in your Steam library it keeps the icon and let's you change it. Or you can give a docking widget like RocketDock a go.
I have everything in my Steam library, which has 132 games in it. Adding in non-steam games I have attached as shortcuts, that makes around 160-170 games. To protect myself from that insanity, I put everything into genre categories, which stay collapsed. Anything which I am currently playing is favorited. I keep that list down to a max of 15 items.

yeah i dont know hwen the last time i launched a game from the desktop was.
Everything is done in Steam. I have shortcuts to my non-Steam games in my Steam library. Keeps everything simple and in one place. No desktop icons, no games pinned to the taskbar in Windows 7.

I run my desktop with no icons at all, and launch all of my games out of Steam. Even with my few non-Steam games, I add them to Steam so I can still launch everything from one place. I haven't bothered to sort them all by category or anything, though; compared to some people my library is relatively small, and I find it easier to just look for things alphabetically.
Everything goes onto the desktop for me. When I'm done with a game, I just delete the shortcut. I was wondering why newer games stopped offering the option to put a shortcut onto the desktop, I guess its no longer the thing to do.
I never have more than 20 games installed at any time. Usually it's closer to 10. For a lot of them it doesn't matter whether I keep them on my faster Velociraptor or not, but I prefer to restrict myself to the space on that drive.
I know this thread is a little old but some one out there might be wondering if there are still some solutions to this.
Here is an app i've been working on that displays your games in a nice way, it's still in alpha but the library feature works pretty well for now.

How do you do it?
Does it show up in Steam as having been played?
Click "+Add a game..." at the bottom of your library list.
No, they don't show up in time played.
