Computer thinks it's fine. It's not. [SOLVED]

Differential Diagnosis request.

Desktop computer, built by me, most parts are about 3-4 months old. Worked fine yesterday, today it's shit the bed.

Description of problem: When powered on, power supply lights up, all fans spinning, POST reports "all clear" with a single short beep, no display or further activity.

Hardware involved: MB is a Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H, CPU is an AMD Phenom II, couple sticks of dual channel RAM, video card is a Sapphire ATI HD5770.

What have I done so far:

1. Disconnected and removed all extraneous hardware. Still have power hooked up to all peripherals (figured it didn't matter), but have unhooked everything from the motherboard except the CPU and memory. Monitor is hooked up to on-board video connection.

2. I removed both memory sticks, just to make sure the mobo knew how to beep right and it gave the correct beep signal for missing RAM. Then tried replacing one stick at a time, to test each stick, and still go the "one beep, everything's fine" report and no further activity.

3. Visually inspected for any loose screws, busted capacitors or other shenanigans that might cause a short with the mobo. I don't see anything.

So, WTF? Could a problem with the on-board video cause this, even when a graphics card is plugged in and used instead? Kind of at a dead end at this point. I don't want to unseat the CPU if I don't have to, just in case I cause a further problem by doing so. What say you?

Just to rule out: have you tried a different monitor/video cable?

No sir, though I don't have either unfortunately. Currently typing from a laptop, in case you're wondering. The only alternate thing I've tried with video is to switch from the expansion card to the onboard and to remove the card completely.

does the laptop have the ability to connect to external display? you could at least hook that up to confirm the monitor works.

Ok, think we may have something. I just plugged back in the second stick of RAM and, based on your asking, unhooked the cable from the monitor and reseated it. We've got good POST and a BIOS screen!

Going to plug everything back in and see how it goes, but can the system halt itself in the event that there's a loose cable on the monitor? Seems like a silly thing to halt booting up the OS for.

Appears that problem is solved. Hooked everything back up and we've got full boot with no apparent problems. Thanks!
