Shor-wii-uken? (also:Guilty Gear Accent Core)

I bumped into this on Gametab.

Now, this isn't a post about the confirmation of a game, or even necessarily a hype thread; I realize a baren Gamefly page hardly sets anything in stone. However, it does return to the spotlight a question many have pondered since the Wii remote first unveiled: How will the system handle traditional fighting games, if it will at all? Tenkaichi 2 put some minds at ease, but I'm not as sure; the Budokai spin-off caters to a much more simplified fighting experience than something as deep and defined as Guilty Gear, or most 2D fighters for that matter. Yet, at the same time, the Wii's archetecture and Nintendo's apparent perspective on the market provides for the most likely candidate for any 2D game to land on. (The Xbox Live Arcade is a reasonable argument to that point, but I could never foresee anything brand new and to the scope of Guilty Gear appearing exclusively on it.)

And so, in addition to the credibility there is in a Guilty Gear's potential appearance on the Wii, I thought we might talk about the handling of similar games in the future. The Virtual Console/Gamecube controller setup would be most practical, but would they release a game with no support for the controller that came with the system? Would they tack on some half-baked motion sensing, or would they go to the trouble of creating a setup that none of us have simply thought of yet? I'm a fan of the Wii and 2D brawlers likewise, so the future of this scenario holds a lot of interest for me. I figured I couldn't be the only one.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

Ive been away from consoles some time. But I'm TOTALLY aching for a (2d) fighter. I really hope they get released soon because I don't want to buy a previous gen console atm.

I know that you know you're aware. But the Wii puns are just going from bad to worse :)

Thanks, much <3 Color me unsurprised.

Still, I'm intrigued as to the "what if...?" situation, in terms of how it'd be done. I hope that developers have ways to work around the quirky controller to save the Wii from the fate of the Gamecube in terms of 2D fighters.

I look at the Nunchuck/Remote setup and I can see the analog stick being used for directional input and the dpad used in place of four face buttons. Then you've got your B, Z, and C trigger buttons, so that's seven non directional inputs for attacks. Should be enough I'd assume.

That's true... And just using A, B, Z, and C would be enough for an SNK game (well, except the funky five-button Atomiswave KoF's). I don't know how comfortable it would be to use the D-pad as buttons, though. The diagonals would also make for a lot of gray area between which attack is executed...

I'd like to see a Wii arcade stick personally. The remote fitting inside the casing. It makes sense to me but I'm not sure if it will ever happen.
