Guillermo Del Toro loses yet again. Battleship and Monopoly still getting made
Guillermo Del Toro's last film was Hellboy 2, which was released in 2008 to middling reviews. He then signed on to write/direct The Hobbit, which he did two years of pre-production for until finally giving up because MGM's bankruptcy problems. Finally, things started to look up because Del Toro announced that he was writing and directing an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At The Mountain's of Madness and it would be a hard R, have a big budget ($150 million), have Ron Perlman in a supporting role, and be produced by James Cameron! Tom Cruise was even in talks to star as the main character.
Earlier today, io9 got everyone’s hopes up by reporting that Guillermo Del Toro’s At The Mountains Of Madness would begin shooting this June. Then Mike Fleming over at Deadline came along and reported that Guillermo would be heading to Warner Bros to shoot “Pacific Rim” as his next film.
I know how personal this project was for Del Toro, since he has basically been preparing for this for over 15 years. You can head to my interview, to hear him discuss some of his thoughts on the project, and what might have been.
Earlier today, before the Deadline announcement, I e-mailed Del Toro to see if the June shoot date was in fact true, and he didn’t respond until just a few minutes ago, well after we all heard of it’s supposed end. This is what I got in my inbox:
Me: I’m sure everyone is e-mailing you this question today, but is this June start date for Mountains of Madness true? Got your greenlight?
Guillermo: The opposite- Dead. – G
Universal balked at financing a big-budgeted R-rated horror film so now the film is dead (The film would have to gross $500 million worldwide for the studio to make its money back). It looks like his next film will now be Pacific Rim with the synopsis of: “set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.” Sounds like something he could make cool! Hopefully things work out for him this time!
Why would it have to make 500 million? Surely it wouldnt cost that much?

Tres lame. The guy has a great eye for effective, disturbing imagery. It would have easily been worth seeing in theaters.
It really is too bad the stuff I like is not close enough to what the market likes. Then again, the market doesn't really like movies in theaters much at all these days, does it?
At least we won't be getting At the Mountains of Xenu now.
Maybe it's better to just leave the Lovecraft stuff alone. Making it true to the original wouldn't work with modern audiences and modernizing it is hazardous at best.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

Roughly. Marketing costs aren't included in the production budget and they're usually pretty sizable, and it would be for this in order to get people to see an R-rated horror film. Studios only get roughly half of the gross box-office (theaters get other half). Also the prints for the films themselves aren't included in the production budget. I'm sure I'm forgetting some smaller details, but you get the idea
why not a game like, monopoly. a tale of a progressive era real estate tycoon and shit
Good news for you because Ridley Scott is directing a Monopoly movie
So horrid an idea that I googled for the purpose of seeking truth in the matter.

Well, I'm excited.
Suspense!
Will the artillery shell aimed at B-6 be a hit? I hope not! That's where Claire is. She dressed as a man to prove women can be sailors too. No one will ever know of her heroism if she sinks to the bottom of the icy North Atlantic.
Battleship (film). Starring in the film are Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Liam Neeson. The film will involve the Navy's response to an alien invasion.

I like to think a lovecraft story done right could be the first computer animated horror movie that really works. If H.P.L. ever got a movie done right more would have to follow. I don't mind waiting ten years if that is what it takes as long as I can see it before I die.

Re-Animator isn't too bad.

In defense of Universal, they've been pretty risky with their genre films lately. It just hasn't panned out well for them. Movies like Drag Me To Hell, MacGruber, Wolfman, and Scott Pilgrim vs The World didn't make any money at the box-office. Really, the only ones that have for them are the Fast and Furious films, the Fockers movies and Couples Retreat.

That's it
That was our last chance for a good Lovecraft adaptation
which is ridiculous
It's called Battleship

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better

$500 million is almost as much as all his directed films have made.
I was kind of glad that he wasn't making The Hobbit after I read a long story on him in The New Yorker recently.
Of course seeing this makes me think of I am Legend which had a budget of $150 million and made over $500 million but it was PG-13.
So in the end I don't know.
In the movie they are going to fight aliens.
it's just not fair

how the hell is liam neeson involved in this
what the heck
Re-Animator isn't too bad.
He wants to get with Rihanna.
Also read this if you want to be depressed about the state of the film industry today
an admirable goal
If that's close to true, it might have something to do with his wife dying
Which ties back to my point regarding Rihanna.
Perhaps, perhaps
