Hey guys, long time no dump. Been feeling like I should share recent activities w/ you.
I was dating this girl for a year and a half, and it was good.
But then we broke up. It was sad.
Been working on getting some 3D skills... Got back into Maya (which I'm slipping out of again >_<) and Zbrush... still a lot to learn.
Here's some abstract thing I did in Alchemy
A concept Character I have
And for the past year or so I've been working on a painting series titled 'Good Hair.' Inspired by Chris Rock's documentary of the same name. It's only 6 paintings, going on 7, up to this point, because I went a while before I finished the first one, but I've been moving at a steady clip lately. Dunno how many I want in it; I think I'll just stop when I'm tired of making them.
(In order of completion)
Update... Imageshack will save us!
This is actually the first Good Hair painting I did...
Annnd here's the most recent.
And this is the latest work in progress. The yellow needs to go, but still figuring out what to make it.
Its really awesome to see you have a handle on your textures, now. Some stuff looks unfinished, like the black and white good hair painting, theres alot of room for refinement on the pattern that would improve things.
The really up close painting of is probably my favorite. It sorta makes me uncomfortable, theres a real feeling of her being in my face, which I think says alot for the rending.
Agh, these portraits are really good. I agree with Iruka, though, some of the paintings feel a little unfinished -- like the B&W one, but maybe that's in contrast to how fine the rendering is in that top digital one and the first in the hair series.
Also agree with the more limited color pallet.

BRO LET ME GET REAL WITH YOU AND SAY THAT MY FINGERS ARE PREPPED AND HOT LIKE THE SURFACE OF THE SUN TO BRING RADICAL BEATS SO SMOOTH THE SHIT WILL BE MEDICINAL-GRADE TRIPNASTY MAKING ALL BRAINWAVES ROLL ON THE SURFACE OF A BALLS-FEISTY NEURAL RAINBOW CRACKA-LACKIN' YOUR PERCEPTION OF THE HERE-NOW SPACE-TIME SITUATION THAT ALL OF LIFE BE JAMMED UP IN THROUGH THE UNIVERSAL FLOW BEATS
I think digital always affords more precision and granularity when going for tight rendering... so I tend to indulge in that, but when I'm painting I like to work a little looser. I'll push some things for emphasis... but no where near the degree I get in photoshop... But, Srsizzy and Iruka, thanks for your responses. I always mull over your feedback, try to chew on it, digest it, see what I can use.
finished(?) this one
My camera always takes poor pictures of these things...

this is super lovely and easily my favourite of the stuff you have posted
I know you're done on your newest one, but you may want to do something about her right hand? The straight back on it with the curve of the inside of it makes it look sort of scoop-shovelish, not much like a hand at first glance. her scarf is super fab though.
Welcome back, dude. Your portraits and such are looking really swell, for realsies.
The original character you have in the OP shows that what you don't draw from life still needs better structure, though. That hobo guy is just a mess. His legs have radically different thicknesses and it's almost as if you're seeing different parts of his body from a number of different angles at the same time.
I also should mention that everytime I read the thread title, I picture it being said by Timbaland, who adds in a quick...without a dope beat to step to.
You have her left arm in the wrong position for the walk unless she has a really really strange walk. Her left arm needs to be in front of the the body and of course you would use perspective to make it appear larger and forward than her right arm at heel strike.
Following the reference, (1) she's not walking but she does have her foot forward, and (2) there's a slant or lean in her shoulders. They don't sit evenly. So I drew/painted it the way it was in my photos.

Do you kinda wish that you could animate a mesh and capture her walking and stuff and render with mental ray or whatever?

Love 'dis.
The paintings of your ex are crazy good, sucks you broke up and now there is art out there...
LOVE the "good hair" series, loved the movie too!
The mood to this one is so delightfully heart-wrenching!
