The story of my first W2

So, I'm a minor in the state of washingtion, area code 98037.

I've just worked through my first financial year with a job, and I'm wondering, what exactly do I do, with the W-2 I just recieved in the mail? I note that it tears in half, and says something about where each half belongs but, can someone give me a more explicit rundown of exactly what I need to do to get my tax money back?

also, am I wrong in thinking that Minors get 100% of their withheld taxes back?

It depends how much money you make. I assume as a minor, you probably made a relatively small amount, so will pay at worst probably 10%. I made about 5 grand and paid zilch, other than SS/fica.

Really your best bet is to check out the IRS website, something like... http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html, or somehow get a copy of turbo tax or something, although its a bit overkill-ish if youre just reporting income and no deductions.

It is likely that you do not owe anything. In fact, it's likely that they owe you money.

Grab form 1040EZ from the IRS's site, fill it out, and mail it in with the part of your W2 that you send the government.

Since there is no income tax in WA, you don't have to worry about state taxes. Just federal ones.

Make sure to check "you" on box 5, as your parents can probably claim you as a dependent.

Is it wrong that I don't want to entrust all that information to the internets? I'm thinking that it might be more secure to fill out that 1040ez and submit via mail if thats what needs to be done.

There are about eleventy billion people that have seen your information in some form or another. If you mail it in, i promise that temp hires of the street making minimum wage are opening your mail and entering the info ... there is no gleaming white castle that irs returns go to.

The free file is accomplished via HTTPS, so if you ever bought online, then you can trust this.

Mail method : 3 weeks minimum for them to mail you a check.

E File : submission to money directly deposited in your account = 1 week.

www.taxfreedom.com or something like that. If you didn't make much (which you didn't), you can e-file for free!

It's safer online than it would be via mail.

Also, the online form makes everything hella fast. It took me about 10 minutes to file my federal taxes this year.
