    A lot of people dislike him because hippy types are so enamored with him, and because he represents theocratic rule of Tibet. China believes it has a vested interest in keeping him an enemy of the state.

    I mean, he's a really cool dude, who lends his support to a lot of great causes. And I think it is hard to argue that rule by China has been much better for Tibet than the old theocracy when the Tibetans themselves hate it. But yeah, not an elected dude.

    Although, in the past decade he has stated many times he would like to do away with the position of Dalai Lama, claiming he will not be reincarnated. Also now he's giving up his political office to allow elections. Most of the criticisms of him seem to fall flat, in my opinion, especially in light of this latest announcement.

    I went to see the Dalai Lama when he came to Michigan to talk about the environment. For someone who couldn't speak English very well, and for someone who is over 70, the dude was really funny.
