I was about to create this thread but I felt like someone else would do it better.

These images on CNN are brutal.

I wonder how sizeable these waves hitting the Pacific Northwest will be.

May need to do the maths involved in that but they will hit in the next few hours.

Reports of cars, ships and Buildings being lifted up

    My God

Japan is THE most prepared country for this as well

Tsunami alerts have been raised in all sorts of Pacific Rim countries, including NZ and Chile. No word yet on whether or not they will have anything serious to deal with. Let's hope not!

Yeah, it took a while on CNN for them to finally come around again to those wave replays, and they looked terrible until you realized the actual scale of the waves.

Then they look just downright horrific. They're moving so fast.

In short, they're gauges and buoys that record wave data. Help predict tsunamis.

They mark locations where they have tide gages, and these things. Basically detect/predict tsunamis.

I don't know, but I'm about a block away from the ocean on the Oregon coast right now. :?

The live stream on Al Jazeera of Japan looks absolutely horrendous.

Off topic, but I love the Oregon coastline. I could live in Cannon Beach for the rest of my life.

Downside to Pacific Northwest: earthquake territory. One day that goddamn Cascadia earthquake is going to hit and then we're all fucked.

I really hope there are notices soon that say the US hospital ships and some amphibious assault ships are being mobilized. I have a feeling they'll be needed. :(

    This is terrible.

This OP could use some more substance to it, but anyway...

We've got forumers over in Japan. I just don't know where exactly. I hope they're all safe and well from this (both the quake damage and the tsunami).

The Alaska tsunami warning center isn't issuing a warning, if I'm reading this correctly, which means that the Pacific Northwest is probably not going to see any effects.

    But Hawaii better watch out.

I'm new here, so I don't know many people.

But Cokebotle is ok, he's posting in [chat]. Quid is, as far as I know, on a submarine, he should be OK.

Kind of sucks that the Civil Defence website doesn't appear to be coping with the traffic its probably getting right now.

Unless its based in Christchurch - they have an excuse.

I'm seeing this being called the 7th most powerful earthquake in recorded history.

Edit: for those not watching AJE, there's a oil refinery on fire and [strike]all[/strike] three, closest to the epicenter, nuclear power plants have safely shutdown without incident

I think the quake wasn't too bad but it's the Tsunami that's going to be real damaging

/edit sorry, in terms of lives, property loss etc. Japan is largely built for earthquake resistance but idk what they can really do about 10m high waves etc
