Fallen Empire: Legions was inarguably the flagship title of GarageGame's
InstantAction service, a short lived browser based games portal. Billed as the "spiritual sequel" to the Tribes game, it featured jetpacks, high-speed aerial shooter combat and flags. Unfortunately, what it didn't have were disc launchers and this absence created a kind of singularity, taking with it the entirety of IA in November, 2010. Luckily, a few brave, mad group of interns and fans managed were given the code in the hopes that the dream would continue. As of this writing, there are still no disc launchers.
God help us all.
So yeah,
L:O is a free, online FPS that takes the core Tribes gameplay, updates it and gives it a new coat of paint. Emphasis is on
core, however. While the jetpacking and skiing is intact (now done by holding down the right mouse button), the vehicles, modules and class customization isn't. I've only played a couple of games, but I'm not sure there's a very wide map selection. Still, it's a lot of fun, and I'd say it better captures the frantic pace of the original two games than any other Tribes-likes while changing enough to be more accessible. The team seems dedicated, hopefully the modding community will take a shine to it and, if nothing else, it's a decent stopgap until
Ascension or
Firefall.
Obviously the game's no longer browser based and requires you download a client, but you still have to register on their site to play it. You can do both of those things
here.
