So I have a USB Rocketstick from Rogers with a 100mB/mth limit that I use for remote computing. My OS is Windows 7 on a laptop. I have two major questions that I'd love some help with:
1) What is a good way to limit the amount of bandwidth I accidentally use?
- I've already turned off Windows automatic updates. Is there an easy way to set up an alternative internet browser that blocks adds and pics, but I could choose what images I do want to view? Any other programs that routinely steal bandwidth? Is there a way to monitor where all the traffic is coming from?
2) I have a wifi iPad that I'd like to be able to have internet access on. Can I connect the iPad to my laptop using an ad hoc network, and access the 3G network through the laptop? I took a look at using ICS, but it won't let me share 'Local Area Connection3', which represents the 3G. I can, however, choose to share LAC1 or 2, which don't have connections at all.
Jesus, I pull more than a hundred megs just checking my email.
I've used 3G connections for mobile computing in the field before, and one portion of the Opera web browser that has came in handy is Opera Turbo.
Not only does it marginally reduce the amount of data I'm pulling, but it speeds up web browsing by a mild but noticeable amount. Any speed increase you can get will be beneficial on a 3G connection.
You'll definitely want to grab some sort of adblocking software (Opera has a decent setup built in) to prevent you from being served ads, especially audio/video ads.

Thank you for pointing me to Opera turbo, that's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for.
