Etsy sellers retalliate: wreck my Web-of-Trust rating :(
If you haven't followed the Penny Arcade Against Etsy Publishing Your Dildo Habit story, please recap here.
Last week I published this story (with much help from an ad hoc Penny Arcade posse), which was picked up by Ars Technica and later The Whole Internet. The story was embarrassing to Etsy, an ecommerce site that does $400 million in annual sales.
After the story got huge, I got a handful of full-negative ratings on Web of Trust, a web credibility plugin that I actually kind of like. These are the only ratings my little family blog has ever gotten, and they correspond exactly to the timing of negative comments from Etsy sellers. So, retaliation.
I now have a malware warning popup on my resume for anyone using a Web of Trust plugin. Great.
If you are a Web of Trust user (or other rating service that I'm not aware of), consider throwing some rating love to my site? A handful of positives will probably get the Warning Label taken off.
This is why I don't use garbage like that application. People can be pigheaded, stupid, mislead, and just wrong.
You should take solace in the fact that almost no one uses that application to filter their web browsing. And I find their solutions hilariously bad, almost as bad as etsy's.
"What if my site is not rated correctly?"
"Tell the people who downrated you to uprate you, or try to plead your case in the forums and hope people take pity on you."
Yeah that's a good solution. Or, exercise some authority over your plugin and fix obvious trolling issues. I swear if someone doesn't hold these company's hands they just run out into the middle of the street and get run over by a fucking truck full of chickens.

I'll green rate you when I get home; I tried to do it now, but it's blocked at work.

"A new take on the epic fantasy genre... Darkly comic, relatable characters... twisted storyline."
"Readers who prefer tension and romance, Maledictions: The Offering, delivers... As serious YA fiction, I’ll give it five stars out of five. As a novel? Four and a half." - Liz Ellor My new novel: Maledictions: The Offering. Now in Paperback!

That's why these systems will suck: the only way to prevent abuse is to remove the option to leave a negative vote. Then the worst they can do is... not leave a positive vote.
I quite agree that Web Of Trust is suspect. However people use it, particularly in small nonprofit orgs that don't have a lot of tech support. It's cheaper than maintaining a blacklist.
So, given that my wife is looking for work, having an entirely undeserved red flag on her online resume is something I would very much like to address. I've posted in the WOT forum, no response.
A message to Web of Trust via their user forums has pegged my rating at the top. It's not very transparent who did this, or what decisions were made, but I won't argue with the results.
Still, pretty depressing when I found it, and if I didn't actually use the plugin, I'd never have caught it.

That's a terrible system if a forum PM can get all your negative ratings reversed (rightly or not) :?

It could be a handful of sellers who think the publicity about Etsy's privacy disaster will hurt their sales or something.

that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
Can you clarify? Raiding who? Etsy or the WOT plugin? If what I'm doing is bad behavior, let me know.

The mods usually frown on us organizing forumers for mass actions outside the forum. Might want to PM one of them.
This sucks but I can't imagine why you'd want to use something like web of trust in the first place.
