The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So, my wife is pregnant with our first child, it's just over a month now. I've heard that nothing can really prepare you for the emotional and financial rollercoaster that is pregnancy and parenthood, but having a guide seems like it would make things easier.
Can any of you suggest a good book that deals with pregnancy and some baby 101 things? I seriously know nothing about babies other than they are tiny humans.

What to Expect When You're Expecting is kind of the standard, and my wife liked it. I had one for guys called something like "My Boys Can Swim!" (A Seinfeld quote) that was okay, kind of a guy-centric, humorous take on pregnancy.
As far as what to do after the birth, the nurses and your wife's doctor are going to be your biggest sources of info.
I would highly (really really) recommend looking into Child Birth classes. They are super informative and help cover alot of the steps that are invovled. Classes set up for couples to attend, which help guide you through nutrition, excerise, planning, and coaching.
I went to one with each of my 2 pregnancies. Not sure where your located, but in Canada you can find info on the provincial level. Your doctor is another source to ask and find out where they are being held in your location.
Second, I absolutely loved my Parents magazine subscription. I had shelves of them I keep for random info, because you never know when something crops up or never thought of.
Third, start looking for coupons! If i remember right, Huggies online had a "membership" type thing you can sign up for. which was great since they sent coupons in the mail for diapers (and you will go through diapers!!). Some formula sites may have the same thing, with samples and coupons. Samples was a really important thing for me since my second son was a fussy eater and refused certain brands.
All I can think of at the moment, but congrats and good luck if you have any random/personal questions feel free to PM me for advice from a mommies point of view

Take classes offered through your hospital. I went to several. Some were fucking horrible, but our La Maz class was amazing (wasn't about breathing techniques, was just a class about wtf to do).
Also, check out Alternadad. Its a fun piece of non-fiction that you may suddenly find humour in.
edit: Read about the Five Ss. Most awesome way ever to soothe a child.

and speaking from experience (twice). the first couple weeks suck. in the most indescribably awesome yet sucky way. just keep reminding yourself, millions have done this before.
When I visited my sister in the maternity room after my niece was born, I spotted a book that looked different from any other baby care book I've seen. It's called The Baby Owner's Manual: Operating Instructions, Trouble-Shooting Tips, and Advice on First-Year Maintenance (Owner's and Instruction Manual) and it's in the style of taking care of your baby as if it was a car. It's mainly geared towards men although I got a kick out of it
If you click on the picture of the book, it will let you look through a couple of pages. It's a good way to see if you're interested in the style or not
