it's definitely not an every-one thing. it's not a tiny, minuscule percentage of the country but it's still only like, maybe 1 percent of the total population, being very generous- licenses to carry
that said, many many many more own guns than carry them regularly
whether it serves as an effective deterrent is, of course, debatable- most carriers feel that it does, whereas most people opposed to carrying either feel that it does not, or it does but not so much that it justifies what they believe to be a high societal cost
i have carried since the day i was legally able and it has already saved me from very grave bodily harm on one occasion
