Creating a website for portfolio

ShinyRedKnightShinyRedKnight Registered User regular
I've been trying to find a way to get a website running for my brother which he would use to display his art portfolio for employers.

The problem is, we've never made a website of our own so we don't know where to start. He needs something that lets him control the layout so it is simple and ad free.

I'm assuming that there's more to getting a website running than just getting a service for the creation of the website itself, but again we've never done this before. Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you're wanting the wider internet to view it then you want to go with a hosting solution and if you want to use fancier stuff than static webpages you'll want to use something which provides PHP and SQL support.

In your situation I'd use some off the shelf php script to display the artwork like gallery.

This is an example of web hosting it gives you a web server with PHP and mySQL access.

I doubt you want to be bogged down in learning HTML, Javascript, PHP and SQL.

So, alternatively you can skip the whole creating a website and simply use an existing service like flickr, picasaweb etc.

Google Sites is fairly simple to set up if you just search for "portfolio" among the templates when you first create the site.

There are also a number of excellent wordpress themes for art and photography for free or cheap

    http://www.woothemes.com/themes/portfolio/

just one a few different theme shops out there

as for domain registration and hosting, I've found http://iwantmyname.com/ and http://www.dreamhost.com very easy to use.

iwantmyname's setup is really straightforward with helping you set up your site with 'Apps' (really, web services) like Google Apps for Domains, Wordpress, Drupal (I think), and Shopify, and provide pretty simple instructions for setting it all up.

Dreamhost is pretty simple for those too. They've got an array of one click installs that do all the setup for you then all you have to do is customize it.

Ah cool, haven't hosted or registered anything recently on dreamhost so it's good to know they're doing the same.

    Alternatively,

    https://www.drupalgardens.com/

Their pricing structure is a bit weird. But it's got a free account level that he can bump up if he needs to.
