I believe there was a thread on this sometime recently but I couldn't find it and don't remember the verdict.
I haven't played pokeman since red/blue but have crazy desire to play. I dont own a ds currently and can't decide whether to go pick up a dsi or wait and try and get a 3ds (haven't pre ordered so might not be possible). It would be $100 cheaper (possibly even cheaper if i buy used) to get a dsi but with the 3ds I could play the new zelda and other games. Any thoughts?

If you've got the cash to spare I'd probably wait around for the 3DS. Most of the new stuff will end up shifted to there from the DS anyway, plus fancy new tech etc. etc. It's completely back compatible with the DS so you don't have to worry about missing anything there.
The only thing you'd be missing is the ability to play Gameboy Advance games, but the DSi can't do that either and if you've not played pokémon since Red/Blue then you probably won't miss it.
However if you don't feel like spending so much money then there are probably some reasonable bundle deals for the new pokémon + a DS/i by now. Just bear in mind that the 3DS will probably be getting a bunch of cool games in the future...
As an added bonus I believe pokémon Black/White have some sort of additional functionality with the 3DS although I don't know what it is...
Wait at least a week before making your decision. That way, the 3DS will be out, and you'll know if there are any available to buy. There will also most likely be a bunch of DSi pre-owned bundles, so even if you've decided against getting a 3DS there will be more choice when it comes to stuff like colour.
I'd say try to find a way to play the 3DS if you haven't already. A lot of people see it fine, and it's easy to turn the 3D off, but personally when I tried it I found the 3D to be annoying to keep in focus. I was so sure I'd buy one, but now I don't know. It depends I think a lot of where you plan on using your DS. If you'll be sitting on a couch or in bed playing it should be fine. If you want to play while walking or on the bus/subway the 3D might be a problem since you need to stay in the exact same spot in front of your DS at all times or else the 3D wobbles and loses focus.
Again, it may not be an issue for you, but it'd be bad if you decided to spend the money on the 3DS and then it doesn't work out for you.
Ok, I think I'll probably wait till the 3ds is out and try to get a chance to play one at best buy or something. Hopefully I can contain my pokefever. Thanks.
Try it out first. I canceled my pre-order after I tested it out. It's very hard to keep in focus and I found it hurt my eyes after a short period of time (like less than a minute). I'll wait at least until the second iteration of it.
The 3D shouldnt factor into it too much if you are planning on playing pokemon, since that wont have any 3D effect at all. It depends on what you want to play, the DSi library is really expansive and you should be able to find tons of cheap games used to catch up on everything you missed.
The 3DS will be more of a future proof descion since there will definetly be a new pokemon game on that in a few years as well as pretty much new anything you could want for the DS (jrpgs, mario, zelda, etc). As well as being able to play everything thats currently in the DS library. You are just going to have to pay a little more for both the system and the newer games.
And canceling a preorder or avoiding it because you dont like the 3D seems silly to me, since like asiina said you can turn it off completly, and you still get updated graphics and a handy nub/slider stick for better control. I plan to get one, though not neccesarily at launch, and will probably play with the 3D off more than on.
I know you can turn it off, but for $250 it's going to have to be a significant upgrade to my DSi. Considering it has less battery life and using the 3d function (the main selling point for me) was both difficult and straining, it didn't seem worth it. I mean we all know it won't be a long time before we see the 3DS Lite.
The DSi is $100 less new, that's almost enough to get all 3 DS Pokemon games through Amazon (105.84). Just saying you should test it out to see if you like it, especially if there aren't any launch games you really want.
