So I, like most of you, spend much of my waking life with headphones crammed into my ears to help block out the unending nightmare world around us. Unlike most of you, I'm not really into music. Instead, I mostly listen to audiobooks and podcasts.
But audiobooks are expensive and podcasts only come out once a week, if you're lucky. So I'm on the hunt for new material to fill all those moments where my eyes and hands are busy and my brain is not. Here's what I've got so far:
Release Schedule: Every Wednesday
Available archive: 16 episodes (entire run)
Podcast length: ~20-30 minutes
RSS Feed:
Judge John Hodgman
Pull Quote: "Do you swear to abide by Judge John Hodgman's ruling, despite the fact that he has no legal training or authority, no matter how ill-advised or dangerous it may be?"
John Hodgman's weekly podcast in which he abuses his authority on all things to render petty and arbitrary judgments on petty and arbitrary arguments. Notable disputes include a debate over whether machine guns count as robots, whether milk, when poured over cereal, should count as a sauce, a beverage, or a broth, and whether Die Hard should be considered a Christmas movie.
Release schedule: Wildly variable. Currently, about once every two to three months.
Available Archive: 13 episodes (most recent; older episodes must be purchased)
Podcast length: ~90 minutes
RSS Feed:
Hardcore History
Pull Quote: "The Germans were literally piling up the frozen bodies of Russian soldiers in front of the tanks to stop them from bogging down in the mud. This is the sort of bitterness and animosity we're dealing with when we talk about the Eastern front."
Dan Carlin is one of those people, like Neal Degrasse Tyson, who is just so excited about his topic of choice that it's impossible to listen to him talk about it without getting excited yourself. Hardcore History is a well-researched, narrative take on history that often involves a viewpoint that isn't widely covered by history classes or the History Channel. It doesn't come out often, but when it does, the payoff is pretty good.
Release Schedule: Every Sunday
Available Archive: 160 episodes (entire run)
Podcast Length: 1-2 hours, sometimes a bit shorter
RSS Feed:
Smodcast
Pull Quote: "I'm worried he's gonna get arrested for spitting into a condom and leaving it in a front of an ATM machine."
I know Kevin Smith is an incredibly polarizing figure on the Interwebs, but if you enjoy his style of humor this is a bottomless resource of the purest shit-shooting. He's got several other podcasts as well, but I can't get into anything that doesn't have Scott Mosier in it. He's the perfect foil, and without him Kevin Smith crosses the line into "too annoying."
Release Schedule: Every Thursday
Available Archive: 147 episodes (entire run)
Podcast Length: 30-40 minutes
RSS Feed:
The Bugle
Pull Quote: "If a man is beaten to the floor in a soundproof chamber, does he make a sound?"
John Oliver is my favorite Daily Show correspondant, and The Bugle is his chance to be the star. Andy Zaltzman is an acceptable sidekick, and this is one of the few things I listen to that make me laugh uncontrollably in public. The humor covers the same general area as the Daily Show, but with more Britishness and puns. One of my favorites.
There. Your move, The Internet. Give me the best thing you got.

Listened to a bit of the Bugle.
Started listening to Tweet Me Harder.
Also listen to Giantbombcast, This American Life, and RadioLab
I love Smodcast, and I agree about Mosier. He's essential - hilarious in his own right, and in the other podcasts without him, Smith just runs wild and isn't nearly as funny. I like listening to his wife on PlusOne but most of the time when Smith talks in that podcast he's just mocking her, which gets old pretty quick.
I respectfully disagree
whatever comes out of Ira Glass' mouth is the most romantic language on earth
It's like "This American Life" but centered around bideo games an- WAIT DON'T WALK AWAY FUCK
seriously though give it a listen it is top-notch
Astounding production level, a bit of a wait between episodes though (few months minimum).
I re-listen to old episodes constantly just because they're so wonderful to hear
Robert Ashley owns.
There is also another awesome podcast called The Film Vault, which I enjoy.
Also, The Nerdist podcast is pretty good too.
My very favorite podcast of all time.
3 nerdy guys talking about everything, and always hilarious and soothing and helps me sleep at night
Rebel FM is perhaps my favorite of the gaming podcasts I listen to. Why? Because these guys have their shit together and aren't afraid to take on completely irrelevant questions.
This show's host is like the young Canadian Terry Gross of science radio. Each week she interviews a scientist or science activist on one or two subjects. She's good at this.
A 30 minute podcast about a wide range of woman's issues. It's informative and brought to you by the How Stuff Works people. The hosts are charming and cover a wide range of topics with light humor.
Savage Love should be familiar to a lot of you but if it isn't just know that it's the best Sex Advice show out there.
A relatively new podcast with a couple comedians who give their reviews of awful movies. Simple.
Secret Satan
Creative Screenwriting is good if you're at all interested in learning more about screenwriting/filmmaking. Just be forewarned that the host Jeff Goldsmith is a huge douche.
so much
it's about sports and comedy and they play indie rock
i don't even like sports but this is really great
i'd recommend it for any fan of Cheap Seats
Paul F. Tompkins is a fucking hilarious comedian and this is his podcast that is really...kinda weird.
Paul has a tendency to ramble a lot and gets kinda ridiculous. It's hard to explain. You should just listen to it.

you only get one guess
All of you should listen to it like, yesterday.
It is awesome!
I need podcasts that are on the same level as the Whiskey media ones (barring comic vine's which i've heard is terrible and doesn't interest me anyway).
I tried rebel fm and geekbox and really, really didn't like them.
I need more gaming podcasts, I'm running out of giant bomb backlog! Also any comedy podcasts (preferrably british, because comedy is one of the few things we can boast about).
Wiretap is a weekly show on CBC with Jonathan Goldstein. He has a sarcastic, morose, dry, and absurd sense of humour. The show is usually based around his daily life with friends and family, monologues, and interviews with odd people (usually book writers.)

WTF
And these are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head and feel like typing in with my phone
London's leading video game radio show (formerly Europe's only, formerly award winning) with Ste Curran, Simon Byron and Ann Scantlebury. They talk about video games, gaming news, the industry, and other things. It's full of humour, and jam packed with entertainment.
JordynNolz.com <- All my blogs (Shepard, Wasted, J'onn, DCAU) are here now!
WTF is excellent. Marc Meron has a very self deprecating moody sense of humor but the highlight of the show is his history with all the various comedians he brings on. He's got baggage but it's baggage you can talk about.
This is a pretty straight forward comedy podcast about Chris Hardwick and his friends. They make a lot of references and sometimes have an interesting guest on.
Doug Loves Movies is a weekly podcast by Doug Benson. It's live and he has 3 or or more guests on each show, usually comedians or actors. They bullshit for half an hour and then spend a good twenty minutes playing a pointless but funny movie based trivia game.
Kinda iffy about this one because I think the comedians involved are not the funniest in the world HOWEVER this is a show wherein they interview porn professionals each week and that is just inherently interesting so give it a try.
